But she did none of those things. Instead, she calmly turned to the maid and asked, “Could you bring us a pot of tea, please. And see if Henri has any biscotti left over from the party.”

Marie looked from Vera to Evan and said nervously, “Miss Vera, are you sure you wouldn’t like me to stay?”

“Quite sure. Thank you.”

With a last troubled look at the two of them, Marie left on her errand.

Vera sat on the love seat and motioned Evan to take the chair across from her. “Well, I see something momentous has taken place to bring you here to me. Sit down, and tell me about it. I would offer you a drink, but it looks like you already had a few last night. So I think we’ll wait for the tea.”

His voice laced with venom, he announced, “I know.”

Vera raised her eyebrows, but remained silent.

“I saw the marriage certificate. With your name as a witness.”

“Yes, I was a witness.” She smiled pleasantly. “It was a lovely ceremony.”
