“Well, we’re all chasing after something. Even if we can’t always see what it is.” Evan was quiet for a long moment.
Suddenly serious, Danny said, “Evan, if you decide to cut and run, I will understand, and I won’t take it personally. There’s a lot of family baggage that comes along with me.”
“And a lot that comes with me as well.”
The two of them were silent, lost in their own thoughts. Then Danny glanced at the clock and jumped up. “Oops, we’re going to be late. And…”
“…and your mother hates it when people are late. I know.” Evan stood up as well. “So do you think Aunt Vera is likely to lob cutlery at me for being my mother’s son?”
Danny laughed and assured Evan, “It’s possible. But I think I can take Aunt Vera in a fair fight. I’ll protect you.”
Evan met Danny’s smiling gaze and quietly assured him, “I know.”
Tickled by the sudden warmth curling in his chest, Danny couldn’t stop smiling as he escorted Evan down to lunch. 12
