Danny closed his eyes and didn’t move.
After a couple minutes of silence, Evan grew concerned. “Danny? Are you okay?”
Slowly he opened his eyes and, sighing, said, “Evan, I’m sorry. I wish it had been different—I’d hoped…but that doesn’t matter now. I’ll talk to my mother in the morning, and I’ll get her to reconsider.”
Evan could see the pain in Danny’s eyes. Damn. He hadn’t wanted to hurt him. “You really had no idea, did you?”
Danny smiled sadly. “No. I thought you’d agreed for the same reasons I did.”
“Which are?”
Danny looked surprised at the question. “Well, for the good of the family and of the city.”
“The good of the city? What does the city have to do with you and me getting married?”
“You don’t know.” It wasn’t really a question.
“Nope. The lawyers told me the where and the when, but not the why.”
