Chapter 86: April Showers, Part 1

San Francisco, April 15, 1912

Paul came home from work tired after a hard day at the docks. He could smell dinner cooking in the kitchen.

"That smells good," he called out.

Cathy came into view with flour dotting her apron. Her toddler, Kevin, was hanging onto her dress. "Paul, you made good time today."

She came and gave him a kiss. Paul bent down and picked up his son.

"You look tired," she said, "sit and read your paper. Dinner will be finished shortly."

"Do you have a women's trade meeting tonight?" Paul asked.

"Yes, but we have time," she called back from the kitchen.

The National Women's Trade Union League was established in 1903 to improve wages and working conditions for women across the country. Cathy joined it back in January and had made some good friends as a result. The movement was starting to gather momentum.

Paul opened his Chronicle. "Did you see today's headline?" he asked.

"No, what is it? What's President Wilson up to now?" she asked in return.
