31 Just Ran Into You - 5sos Medical

"Wake up," Ashton said as he hit his hand on the table. Luke slowly looked up being greated by his band mate and former colleague.

"Long night shift," Ashton asked as he changed into his working clothes to switch jobs with Luke. Luke and Michael had just finished their night shift while Ashton and Calum would be starting their morning shift.

Luke stretched his arms out and nodded while yawning.

"Massive triage," Luke said as he saw every thing that happened that night flitsing before his eyes, "it was horrible."

Luke hadn't had a break until 10 minutes ago and he'd fallen asleep during writing the exchange for the morning shift.

"Tell me," Ashton said as he took a place at the opposite of Luke. Luke just shoved the map towards Ashton as he went to grab a cup of coffee himself.

"Massive bus crash with 10 till 14 year olds and 6 busses. 20 deaths, 178 had minor injuries, 120 had injuries which they had to be hospitalised for and 45 are still in live treating condition," Luke said as he poured the coffee, "I could get ahold of every parent except the ones of Sophie Canninga."

Ashton quickly searched for Canninga in the book since all registered people of a traige were put in alfabetical order.

"Sophie Canninga," Ashton readed out, "10 year old. Multiple breaks and internal bleeding. Emergency surgery performed by Dr. L.Hemmings. Parents uncontacted."

Luke nodded at everything that Ashton read out. "She laid between the pile of death. The bus that was hit between the wall and other busses, almost nobody survived who sat at the very top, only she did."

At the same time Michael came walking back towards the kantine. He looked tired as well and immediately reached for a cup of coffee before he laid his head on the table.

"Don't say a word at all Ash," Michael said as his head still enjoyed the table as cussion. Ashton was their actual boss and didn't want his people to sleep in kantines or other public spaces when they were on shift.

"I already heard," Ashton spoke, "just go home you two and we'll see further

Thanks boys for the effort of tonight."

Ashton slowly got up as he was about to start his shift.

"Let's head home," Luke said as he nudged Michael's arm. He sleepy looked up and nodded.

--------------------------------------------------------

"Luke get up," Michael hissed as he pulled the covers of his roommate. After coming home the boys immediately crashed into their beds and by now it was already 2 pm.

This most likely meant that they really had to get up by now if they wanted to be productive this day.

"Nooo please Mikey let me sleep," Luke said as he casually turned over.

Michael groaned and jumped onto the bed knowing that will wake up Luke eventually.

"Stop okay," Luke said as he got up and pushed Michael playfully on the ground. "Auw that hurts," Michael said pouting his lips. Luke just laughed and kissed his boyfriend.

"Better?" Luke asked. Michael nodded and happily hopped behind the younger boy. "Whats for lunch actually?" Luke asked as he reached the kitchen only wearing some football shorts he found laying on the floor. "Yeah about that," Michael spoke, "we don't have any lunch supplies or somthing so if you could go down to the stores that would be great. And take some dinner with you would you?"

Luke sighed and walked towards the closet to grab a clean shirt, "but what are you going to do then?" he asked refering to Michael.

"Just chilling and waiting for you to come home," Michael answered as he poured himself a coke in. Luke looked weird towards his boyfriend. Why on earth would his boyfriend leave him to go shopping for groceries while that same person was going to chill out.

" And then why do I have to get the groceries?" Luke asked as he put his shoes on.

"Because Ash gave you a day of while I have to work a night shift remember. I'm not even near done working," Michael laughed. Luke nodded getting the idea why he was doing to groceries. Luke got on his other shoe, kissed his boyfriend and left off towards the shop.

Luke was humming to some music he had in his head. Michael had given him a list of supplies but he knew Luke was getting other things as well, things that he liked himself which weren't the most healthy options.

As Luke got to the Coles he got his shopping cart and wandered through the paths of the fruit. Michael had written down a few fruit occasions and Luke wasn't going to let his boyfriend down on that.

"Hey you here too," someone said. Luke turned around and came eye to eye with his best mate during middle school. It was Trent Maxwell. (aka Maxi 😏) . "OMG Trent what's you doing here?"

"Ehhhh doing groceries," Trent laughed. Luke laughed as well. "We should catch up mate," Luke said. Trent nodded and left his contacts with Luke. They waved goodbye and walked another way in the grocery store.

"Alright we need more apples," Luke laughed by himself. It was an coincidence that he came in contact with Trent not knowing he would be the one who was going to safe him.

Luke went on shopping and went to checkout 30 minutes later. He looked over to his chart and watched the things he had put in and watched the list Michael had given him. He nodded satisfied as he walked towards the kassier.

"Hello love," Luke said to the elderly woman as he laid all the stuff on the band. The woman smiled and kept on scanning the groceries of Luke.

"That would be 57 dollar please," the woman behind the check out says. Luke smiled and showed her his creditcard.

He thanked the woman and walked outside the store.

He put on his sunglasses and walked home.

-------------------------------------------------------

Luke's phone went. He thought it was Trent but as he looked at the caller id he found that it was his work.

"Hemmings," he picked up.

"Hey lucky," Ashton said, "I have news about Sophie canninga. You know the girl where we couldn't contact her parents."

"Yeah I remember," Luke said as he crossed the road.

"Well you won't belive this but her parents died in another car crash 20 km south," Ashton said as he sighed.

"Than get child support to her and put her up for adoption ju-," Luke wanted to say but was cut off BY Ashton.

"She's adopted," Ashton worriedly said. Luke didn't have a good feeling to it since child's aren't adopted that quickly.

"Ash you better not tell me that you two adopted her," Luke said holding back his laugh.

"Well let's say she'll live with us but we didn't adopted her."

"Oww god no I can't leave Michael alone for a while or he adopted someone," Luke laughed. He knew that Michael would adopt Sophie and to be fair the two of them discussed it when they laid in bed.

"I'll come over when I get the groceries in the house," Luke said.

He hung up and looked at the street. He smiled at the woman by the post with her daughter, he smiled at the dog who came running by his leg, he smiled knowing he's getting a daughter. As Luke stepped on the street he didn't think the inventable was going to happen to him. As he was in the middle of the street, a car came racing down the way. Moments later Luke was thrown into the air and thanks to the force of gravity been released on the hardest way. There he laid, soon to be dad, husband and doctor. He laid there motionless not even conscious.

"I've got you Luke," a soft voice spoke. That voice was from Trent. Trent was going to take care of him. Luke was safe.

Operator:

Triple zero do you need an ambulance, firefighter or police.

Trent:

Ambulance please

Operator:

Okay just try to stay calm for me. Where about do you need an ambulance.

Trent:

Just outside coles. It's a hit and run victim. Please hurry

Operator:

Okay is the patient breathing?

Holy shit. Trent felt bad. He was a lifeguard but his instinct clearly didn't take over. Yes he immediately checked for a pulse but the breathing just completely washed away due to his worry about his mate he just saw in 5 years time.

Trent:

Wait let me see.... Eh no he isn't and I might have a feeling I'm losing his pulse.

Trent searched for breathing but didn't find it. Neither did he find a pulse anymore.

"I'm sorry buddy," Trent excused himself as he began to do chest compressions on his mate.

"and one and two and three," Trent blurted out as he began the cpr. A woman, not much older than the boys, came up and got the phone. She was ending the phone call meanwhile another man, let's say an younger boy, came up to Trent and helped him. Trent was pushing like a madman and just hoped his mate would make it.

--------------------------------------------------------

"No I don't get why you put Michael up again," Calum said to Ashton as he and his colleague walked back to the kantine.

"Because Luke wants to aks Michael to be his husband. I'm calling Luke in tonight as patient and Michael doesn't treat him. It's until he spots me that he knows that some of us is laying there and than Luke will ask Michael to marry him," Ashton explained once again.

He poured himself a cup of coffee in but before he could even get a dip of it, his pager went of.

"Great a resus outside Cole," Ashton told as he threw his jacked on him, "you standby?" Calum nodded and Ashton ran off.

Ashton hopped in the vehicle on the passenger seat. He was the first ambulance and would be closely followed by another one since they always send two ambulances towards a resuscitation.

"Do you have some more info?" Ashton asked the driver who drove with an amazing speed through the streets of Sydney.

"I just got more before you hopped in," he answered, "24 year old male. Hit and run victim. There's a lifeguard of duty on the scene. Open tibia fracture, dislocated shoulder, broken hip, possible nack and back trauma, big head trauma, unconscious at arrival and his heart stopped beating."

The ambulance pulled up to the scene. Ashton saw a young looking male pumping on a chest. Since Trent blocked Ashton his vision on the patient, Ashton had no idea that Luke was laying there.

" I grab the defibrillator and you grab the oxy and other bag," Ashton instructed the driver who nodded. As the ambulance came to a halt, Ashton immediately jumped out, got the defibrillator and ran towards the boy laying on the street.

Ashton adjusted his sunglasses to his head just when he was about to reach the boy.

No it couldn't be true. Ashton stood there in shock. It just couldn't be. He hoped he would wake up next to Calum any time soon who was telling him it was a dream.

But it was not. There he laid, more death then alive, his best mate and colleague Luke Hemmings.

"Alright," Ashton said as he collected himself again, "let's see what we've got here."

Trent was still busy doing cpr while Ashton connected the wires of the defib to the pads he laid on Luke his torso.

"Registration heartbeat. Do no tough the patient," the defib explained. Trent immediately pulled his hands of Luke and let the defibrillator read Luke his heartbeat. Ashton sat crunched down at the defib waiting to press the button and shock his colleague. He was registrating it all until the defib spoke up again.

"Shock advised," the defib said.

"Get back," Ashton warned the boy who he had no idea what his name was. Trent immediately went a few meters back and saw how the shock was delivered to Luke.

While the shock was delivered, the second crew got to the scene.

Ashton sighed as he knew what to do next but he wasn't feeling it.

He was the one to deliver the shocks and pronounce Luke death if the shocks didn't have an effect.

"Shock delivered," the defib told. The other paramedics immediately hocked the monitor out the other ambulance. Once the monitor was hocked up, Ashton still didn't see a messurable heartbeat.

"Shock advised," the defib told again. Ashton adjusted his glasses and looked away once he delivered the other shock. He could bear seeing his best mate going through it again.

"

Shock delivered," the defib told. Ashton wiped a tear away under his sunnies. He saw that the boy, who was resuscitating Luke when Ashton entered the scene, was having difficulty with the scene as well. He was on the edge of shock.

"I got a pulse," a medic yelled. Ashton immediately turned around and heard the monitor having a measurable heartbeat.

"Alright let's get the intubation kit," Ashton ordered. Usually only a doctor was allowed to use the intubation kit and those were usually on a helicopter. But since Ashton was finished with a case and the accident didn't happen far from their hospital, he decided to jump on the first vehicle.

Ashton was now the only doctor on scene and had to intubate his best mate. To be fair he wasn't liking it.

When he pulled off the sunglasses of Luke his face he saw how hard the crash was. His eye socket was completely shattered and Ashton prayed for a miracle that he didn't lose his eye sight.

Ashton was trying to unlocked Luke is jaw since it was dislocated.

"Valerie can you help for a moment," Ashton asked an intern who was on the other ambulance. The girl nodded and helped Ashton unlocking the jaw.

"Alright het your fingers on the back of his mouth," Ashton said as he pulled his hand through his hair, "then pull the jaw towards you and down at the same time. After that pull the jaw a bit sideways than it should be back in place."

Valerie nodded and did what Ashton asked her to do.

She placed her thumbs on the sections Ashton pointed out. She pulled the jaw back in place in an instant.

"Okay," Ashton said as he got Luke his neck in his hands. He ha dhelad Luke his neck since he knew that they weren't able to relocate the jaw with a neck collar on Luke's neck.

Ashton slowly lifted Luke his chin but kept his head between his legs. Ashton shone with a little light in Luke's mouth and saw that he was able to get the intubation into Luke's airway.

He slowly slid the tube in and waited for the bag to placed on.

"I'm gonna listen for a sec," Ashton said as he slid his stethoscope under Luke's shirt. He found that the tube was connected correctly but ordered the other paramedics to gut his shirt off.

"Alright get a neck collar, back bord, vacuum his leg and make sure he doesn't move an insce." All the other nodded and Ashton walked over to the guy who was resuscitating Luke. He looked familiar to Ash but he just couldn't place his face.

"Thanks," Ashton said as he sat down next to the boy, "did you know him?"

The boy turned to Ashton, who was still wearing his sunnies, and nodded. "He used to be in my class when we grew up," Trent chocked out. Ashton looked weird since he had sat with Luke in the same classes since kindergarten.

Ashton now put his sunglasses on the top his head. "Come again," Ashton said wanting an explanation of the boy.

"Luke hemmings. We used to have every subject together when we were in 5th grade till graduation of high school," Trent explained.

Ashton was now confused as hell until suddenly it clicked. The boy he was sitting next to used to Luke's best friend until he moved away to Queensland.

" But wait. Are you Trent?" Ashton asked wondering. Trent nodded but before he could respond he got called away to leave.

"I'll explain later," Ashton said as he got on his feet, "just come with the ambulance if you want."

Trent nodded and ran behind Ashton.

—————————–————————

"Where is he," Michael cried as he reached the reception of the ER. He got called by Ashton that Luke was hit by a car and was in a terrible shape.

"Who do you mean doctor Clifford," their usual receptionist said.

"Luke, I mean doctor Hemmings. He was brought in by Doctor Irwin," Michael explained as he frantically looked around. In the corner of his eye he saw a young man standing up and walking towards Michael.

"Let's sit down for a moment yeha," he said as he laid a hand on Michael's back.

"Trent?" Michael asked soflty as he cried into Trent his neck. Trent used t be close to Michael as well, he even was his ex but they went apart as good friends.

"I'm here buddy," Trent shussed Michael.

"Did you know about Luke," Michael asked as he wiped his tears.

Trent slowly nodded. "I saw everything happen," he said insecure.

"You mean you?" Michael said not wanting to say the word.

"I did," Trent said as he got tears in his eyes again.

Michael shook his head in disbelief. He cried more and threw himself in the musclar arms of his ex boyfriend.

"Michael, Trent," Calum said as he saw the two sitting in the waiting room. The waited a good 10 hours. Michael had cried himself to sleep and Trent nervously scrolled through his phone. He had contacted his best mate that he wasn't in the shape to work the following day and after explaining he was more than willing to take over his shift.

Trent slowly nudged Michael awake who shot up.

"Thank God Cal tell me something," Michael said as he speed walked to his colleague.

"Lets say he's a miracle," Calum said, "he had a massive brain bleed, ruptured splint and liver. His tibia and fibia are completely shattered so there are follow up surgeries required. He also broke his eye socket and nose. His neck and back aren't broken but severely bruised. He'll be out of surgery soon but we don't know how he's going to be."

Michael cried and thanked both boys. Everything became a little too much for him and fainted in Trent his arms.

" Fuck gurney," Calum yelled as Trent laid an unconscious Michael to the ground. Calum lifted Michael onto the gurney and ran with Trent to another cubicle.

"He's probably dehydrated in combination with severe stress," Calum said as he set up an saline.

He ribbed Michael his sternum and immediately he came around.

"Yezz Mickey that was something," Calum laughed.

"I suggest you lay on this bed for a good hour because I don't want you fainting again. I'll wheel you to the same room as Luke yeah," Calum suggested.

Michael nodded and got wheeled into the room by Calum and Trent.

"Here we go," Trent said as he got a chair and sat down.

Michael turned his head around and looked at Luke. There he laid his soon to be husband, father and loving friend. God he loved him, even a car wasn't going to take that away from him.
