40 It's Goes Down Hill From Here - 5sos Medical

"Why on earth is it so cold," Calum whined as he shivered from the cold. His 5 year old sister Lacey laughed. "Because snowy," Lacey explained. Michael and his 10 year old sister Jessie laughed at Lacey at the other side of the room.

"Good thank you Lacey," Calum smiled, "I didn't knew that."

Ashton and his younger brothers Robin and Tommy, both 15, walked into their cabin as well.

The boys were on a holiday with their younger siblings. They had just landed in Austria and were unpacking their stuff.

All the siblings were ranged from 3 to 15 year old. Luke had one of the youngest siblings who were 3 and 7, named Lilian and Logan. Luke was still busy unpacking with both while Ashton was doing grocery's.

"I'm sorry," Robin spoke, "but I really have the feeling I've never been so cold in my life before. Ashton will do the grocery's on his own for now because no way Jose that I'm stepping outside this hut one more time."

Ashton laughed at the whining from his younger brother. "Don't think so Robin," Ashton replied sarcastic, "maybe Lacey would like to go next because I also I'm done with your whining."

Lacey looked up and jumped up and down nodding from excitement.

"Hey Mikey," Jessie spoke, "can Tommy, Robin and I maybe go looking around this place?"

"I'm sorry Jessie," Robin spoke, "but I just told everyone in this room that I'm not going outside anymore."

Jessie chuckled as Robin ruffled through her hair. "But for you I'll make an exception."

"I don't think that's the best idea at the moment," Calum joined their conversation, "it's going to storm within an hour. Maybe tonight or tomorrow morning?"

Robin and Jessie promised Calum that they would go tonight. Jessie hadn't travelled all the way from Australia in order not to go snowboarding.

**

All the younger siblings were watching some sort of movie with hot chocolate."I don't know about it Cal," Ashton spoke. The boys were in the kitchen. It had stormed the whole day with quite a good snowfall. They boys were debating about letting the older three going snowboarding tonight.

Calum and Luke thought it was an amazing idea, but their siblings weren't going.

"I promise we'll look out for the three," Calum promised Ashton and Michael. Luke and Calum would go snowboarding with the oldest three and Ashton was staying back in the cabin with the other youngsters.

"Alright," Ashton sighed giving in, "but if something happens to one of the three I'll personally kill you both." Ashton pointed the knife he had in his hands for cooking towards the boys.

Calum and Luke nodded as they high-fived each other before walking off towards the living room.

"I still don't think it's a good idea Ash," Michael spoke as he jumped onto the kitchen counter, "I just don't have a good feeling about it. What if Jessie faints or has a seizure? Ash we both know that's something she can have. True her medicine is working and she hasn't had a seizure in years but still."

Ashton sighed and slowly shook his head. "Mikey calm down," Ashton softly spoke, "yes I am aware that Jessie got epilepsy and yes I am aware she can have a seizure. She'll be fine. She's with two doctors who've dealt with seizures before. Look at Cal, he's a paramedic and Luke is an ER nurse. They know how to handle things."

It was true. Calum, Michael, Ashton and Luke were all doctors. Ashton was a trauma surgeon while Michael had specialized himself into a general ER doctor.

"I know it's just," Michael spoke his head hung low. Ashton grabbed his chin into his hands so Michael had to look towards Ashton. Ashton didn't speak however. He placed a passionate kiss onto his boyfriends lips. Michael didn't protest, why would he? He wanted this moment to last forever, but their moment got interrupted by loud screams of food.

Ashton pulled away and gave Michael a look that was saying they were continuing once everyone had left.

"Fries," Lilian and Logan yelled once Tommy emptied the stuff that was in the bag. Calum, Jessie and he had gotten fries from some place further down.

Ashton did cook dinner but that magically burned. He had send his brother down to get fries and Calum joined him with Jessie. As they were walking towards the shop, they saw a steep hill they were definitely trying tonight.

Jessie and Tommy were the only two who were snowboarding tonight. All the others who were joining them had chosen a 'safer' option and went with the skis.

Everyone sat down at the large table and enjoyed the dinner. "Oww Luke," Calum spoke as he reached for the ketchup, "we just saw this hill on our way to the town. Props we'll go down there tonight."

Michael looked to Ashton with a sad face knowing which hill they meant. It was a hill in the forest just a kilometer away from their cabin. If something would happen to Jessie there was no way emergency services would get to her in time. Damn he didn't even know if they had service there.

"Just promise to watch out yeah," Michael spoke.

All the boys and Jessie nodded. "Always," she answered.

"We need to wax our boards still Jess," Tommy spoke. Jessie nodded as she shoved some fries into her mouth.

"Yeah I know," Jessie answered, "after dinner?"

Tommy nodded and continued to eat the fries as he watched Jessie helping Lacey with her fries.

"We're leaving in an hour or so," Calum spoke, "see you than."

**

Tommy was busy removing his bindings, Jessie was busy trying to keep Logan out of the wax.

Before both could even wax their boards, they needed to loosen their bindings. The screws were lying on the beds so they wouldn't get mixed up.

" Do we have base cleaner here?" Tommy asked. This made Jessie look up and nod. She was currently busy with the base cleaner herself to get the old wax off. She pointed to a small tube laying on the side. "But I'm almost done," she spoke.

"Alright," Tommy spoke as he stretched, "I'll set up the iron than."

They had to iron their boards before they could put the wax on it.

Just as Tommy left, Ashton entered the room with Luke.

"Hey girl," Ashton spoke, "we want to talk."

Logan climbed onto Luke and Jessie looked towards the boys as if she'd done something wrong.

"Yeah what is it," Jessie answered as she put away the cloth she was working with.

"We need to talk about tonight," Ashton sighed, "it's about Mikey. He's very concerned about it. He doesn't want you to go because you might have a seizure."

"But I never had one anymore since 5 years ago," Jessie protested, "and besides Luke's there."

"Yeah that's why he's letting you go," Ashton spoke as he shoveled towards Jessie, "so you need to promise me something. If you feel off or something like that, go to Luke immediately. We don't want you having a seizure on the hill."

Jessie nodded knowing what Ashton meant. "I know Ashie," Jessie spoke, "I don't want that either because seizures make me feel horrible." Jessie silently began to cry which made Ashton hug her. "I know girl. I know."

"Oww and Jess," Luke got into the discussion, "I don't want you to go alone. You're too young, so either stay with Tommy or with me and Calum."

Jessie nodded knowing what he meant. "Yes I'll stay with you and Tommy."

"We love you girl," Ashton spoke as he kept on hugging her. Tommy walked in to the scene and was taken aback. Why on earth was his brother hugging his 'sister'? Did she have a seizure again? She hadn't told Michael or Ashton but Tommy knew. Jessie was still having seizures but she didn't want to be a burden to her brother and his boyfriend.

"What happened?" Tommy frantically asked. "I just had a good chat with her," Ashton answered as he tapped his brother on the shoulder.

Tommy looked Jessie dead in the eye who shook her head noticible for Tommy. Luke also got up and walked out of the room as well.

"Jezz Jessie," Tommy spoke, "you scared me. So no seizure?"

Jessie shook her head. "Let's wax some boards," she exclaimed.

--------------------------------------------------------

"Alright guys," Calum stood on top off the hill, "we need to get some things straight. We don't want you to get hurt because if one of you is than we're getting killed. Just follow the route and you'll be fine. If someone does get hurt, you come immediately towards us."

Jessie, Tommy and Robin nodded. Calum made his way down towards the hill followed by Robin.

"You stick to Tommy right?" Luke more asked. Jessie nodded and went after Tommy.

"I saw this amazing forest just a little from the path," Tommy spoke, "but I only want to go when you're feeling it because I don't want you seizing there."

Jessie just smiled which meant enough for Tommy. "Alright let's go then," he giggled.

Both set off towards the end of the route. They didn't see Calum nor Luke down so Jessie signaled towards Tommy that it was safe for them to go to the forest.

"You have to stay close Jess," Tommy spoke as they entered the forest.

"Wauw Tommy," Jessie exclaimed with her mouth wide open, "this place is magical."

Tommy smiled and nodded as he went down the hill. "But do look out for boulders and stuff. Oww and we're not going too far into the forest because Calum and Luke still need to be able to find us."

"Yeah alright," Jessie smiled. Together they boarded away into the forest.

**

"There's a storm coming," Tommy sighed. The two of them were sitting against a tree. Tommy used to snowboard on a compitive level so he knew when storms were coming or when things could turn nasty.

"Let's head home than," Jessie said as she stood up. She helped Tommy back up his feet again and before they knew it, they were sliding down the hill.

Tommy was a few meters ahead of Jessie. She suddenly started to pick a speed she didn't had before. She couldn't stop anymore as she was fired off her board by a boulder into a tree.

Tommy heard the earpieces scream of Jessie and immediately turned around. He saw Jessie flying through the air. "NOOOO," he screamed from the top of his lungs.

He quickly clicked his board from his feet and ran towards Jessie.

She was unconscious and her whole body looked disfigured.

"Holy fucking shit," Tommy said as he crunched down at the tree, "I'll get help Jess." As he pulled his phone out of his pockets he noticed he didn't have a signal. "Alright other approach," Tommy sighed, "you'll be fine Jess. I'll sort it out."

Tommy frantically looked around and knew he had to get Luke and Calum. He had to get to them but he couldn't leave Jessie here on her own.

After what felt like hours, someone boarded by and immediately stopped seeing the state Jessie was in.

" Holy what happened?" the guy asked.

"Could you stay with her please for a sec?" Tommy said not waisting time, "I need to get help."

The guy nodded and Tommy boarded away back on the road.

As Tommy got back on the main route he didn't spot Calum and Luke first but he did see his brother coming his way.

"ROBIN!" Tommy yelled from the top of his lungs. His twin brother immediately stopped and came his way.

"What's wrong mate," Robin asked as he put his glasses on top of his helmet, "where's Jessie?"

Tommy slowly shook his head. This set Robin to tears as Tommy did that. "Where's Calum and Luke?" Tommy frantically asked. Robin waved him over to follow him.

Both boys went down to the après ski and Tommy immediately spotted Luke and Calum.

"Luke! Cal!" Tommy yelled. Both boys looked up and hearing the amount of fear in Tommy his voice they knew something was wrong.

Calum was on his feet immediately and sprinted towards Tommy. He knew something was wrong with Jessie.

"Tommy where's Jessie," Calum immediately asked. "I'm so so sorry," Tommy cried. This meant enough for Calum.

"Show us the way," Luke spoke already checking if he had signal.

"How bad is it?" Calum asked as he ran behind Tommy. "Really bad," he sighed.

**

"She's there," Tommy pointed. From even the distance they still had to go, Calum could see things were horribly wrong. He picked up his pace and slid down next to Jessie.

He did a quick assessment of her injuries but knew she had to get to the hospital immediately.

" Luke get your ass here," Calum yelled. Tommy was currently thanking the guy who had stayed with Jessie all the time.

"Oke Jess," Calum said as he laid his jacket over Jessie her wounds, "I want you to open these beautiful eyes for me girl."

Luke quickly checked her vitals and shook his head to Calum. He immediately demanded Robin to check for any signal.

"We need to get her away from here now," Luke spoke, "but she has a hip fracture and an instable broken pelvis."

Calum nodded as he examined her head injuries. Since Luke was trained ER specialist and Calum was a paramedic, Jessie was in safe hands. But that didn't mean that she wasn't going to die if she wasn't being moved quick.

"Alright we need something as a backboard because we need light," Calum yelled out. Luke nodded keeping his eyes on the vitals. Calum quickly laid his eyes on Jessie and Tommy their boards.

"Tommy quick," Calum said as he kept his hands on Jessie her neck, "bind those two boards together with our ski sticks."

Tommy quickly unlocked himself from his board and got the board of Jessie.

Luke was checking Jessie her vitals with everything he had in his reach. Calum was trying to get a quick diagnosis.

Suddenly the weather turned as well and an amazing amount fo snow was falling out of the snow and it got darker by the seconds.

Just before Calum wanted to go on towards her shoulders, he noticed how Jessie was getting stiff between his hands.

"Jess?" Calum said as he got his flashlight out. He shone into her eyes and noticed how her pupils weren't dilating.

"Luke she's seizing," Calum spoke, "get her pelvis stable and hip."

Jessie her muscles were convulsing and Calum had to keep her head steady. A seizure was never coming in handy but this timing couldn't be worse.

"We need to get her moving because I doubt this is one of her episodes because she hadn't had one for years," Luke concluded. Tommy picked this up and knew this was the time to spill the secret. Jessie would kill him afterwards but he would take that for granted. If he could safe her life with this information, he would do that.

"Actually," Tommy spoke up,"she still has them." He wiped away a few tears.

"Come again," Calum spoke as the seizure subsided. "She still has seizures. She didn't want to worry you guys but the last one she had was moments before we flew to here."

Calum shook his head to Luke who was busy improvising something to create a pelvis stability. He knew her pelvis and hip were high on their priority list because she could have internal bleeding as well and as long as she was unconscious, both boys couldn't get out of her where it hurts.

Robin came running back down from the hill and yelled that he didn't have a signal.

"Alright," Luke sighed, "we need to get her on the boards. I'll keep her pelvic steady while Calum does her neck. I want the two of you to shove the board all the way to her back."

Tommy, who had just finished the last piece of the sticks connected to the board, and Robin immediately grabbed their improvised backboard.

"On my count," Calum said, "3.2.1. Let's roll." Luke and Calum rolled Jessie onto her side. Luke gestured the boys that they could shove the board under her. When the board was shoved under, Calum and Luke rolled her back.

Calum immediately took hi jacket off, even though the storm was reaching its high and the temperature was reaching -13 degrees celcius. Luke understood and took off his as well.

"Alright Tommy and Robin," Calum spoke as he laid both jackets against Jessie her head, "have you both got a belt?" Robin and Tommy nodded and passed Calum their belts.

Calum strapped the belts tight and secured them under the board.

"Alright," Luke spoke, "I want Tommy lifting the side by her head with Calum and Robin her end with me. When Calum counts to three I want all of us to lift together so we can walk her home."

Tommy and Robin nodded and did what Luke asked them to do.

"Alright on my count. 1...2...3"

**

"Holy fucking shit," Ashton yelled out as he saw the state Jessie was in, "lay her in my fucking car. I'm not even near done with you two."

Calum and Luke had their head hung low.

Ashton and Michael were just done with putting Logan to bed as Robin stormed into their cabin. Ashton and Michael immediately saw something was wrong and followed him outside. They were met with the most horrific sight they ever met.

Michael broke down and Ashton immediately took over.

He commanded Calum and Luke to lay her in the car. He also yelled at Calum to drive them. Michael wasn't in a state to drive and Calum was used to drive under such conditions.

Both boys did what Ashton asked. Ashton on the other hand went towards Michael who was beyond shocked.

"Hey Mikey," Ashton softly spoke as he laid his hand on his boyfriend, "I'm not saying that she'll be fine but she'll make it. From my first look she has a broken pelvis, hip and she had a seizure. I'll try to relocate her shoulder on the way but she needs surgery on her tibia and fibula. Other things will be ruled out in the hospital and I'll be there all the time."

Michael nodded and cried into Ashton his shoulder.

"Promise to take care," Michael said. Ashton nodded and ran towards the vehicle. He suddenly got stopped by Tommy yelling his name.

"Ash please," Tommy cried, "I want to go with you."

Ashton quickly nodded and sent the bloke towards the front seat. Jessie was strapped in the car and Ashton took place as well, careful not to move the girl in any way.

"Drive," Ashton hissed to Calum who found the speeding pedal immediately.

**

"Alright 10 year old Jessie Clifford," Ashton spoke as he ran with her into a cubicle, "fallen down a hill. Had a seizure for 4 minutes and 2 seconds. Unconscious at arrival. Gcs 5. Open tibia and fibula fracture. Dislocated shoulder relocated at scene. Possible broken pelvis and hip. Neck and back injuries unknown."

Ashton looked up to the people who were in the room and it looked like they saw water burn.

"Ehh I'm sorry sir," one of the interns spoke, "we're short staffed and since you brought her here all the way we didn't think it was this serious. We're all interns and our trauma surgeon is stuck in the snowstorm."

Ashton sighed knowing he was the responsible on this one. "I'm a surgeon," Ashton spoke, "just make sure I'm authorized to preform here. Order a full cti and mri. Do you know how to put in an IV?"

All the students nodded and Ashton picked one of them to set it up.

"I'm going to scrub," Ashton spoke, "are there anesthesiologist on scene?"

One of the students nodded and booked an OR.

"Alright you need to take her to the mri and I'll meet you in the or."

The students took the brakes off the bed and ran with her towards another ward where she was taking into the mri.

Ashton walked towards the waiting room where he had left Calum and Tommy.

"Jeez Ash," Tommy yelled as he saw his brother walking in, "what happened how is she?"

"It's bad Tom," Ashton sighed, "they're short staffed so I'll be operation. She's in a critical state. Because you guys had to move her and she definitely broke her hip and pelvis, internal bleeding isn't ruled out. Her leg needs serious replacement and pins. I'll come back within four hours and tell you if surgery was successful."

Tommy was on the verge of a breakdown and Calum tried to calm him down when Ashton left.

" Will she make it?" Tommy wondered. Calum nodded and reassured Tommy his brother was the best surgeon back home he knew.

Four hours later Ashton came back and smiled. Tommy ran towards Ashton and hugged his brother if his life had depended on it.
