I only have one issue with this novel, which is Michael's case of dementia. He's already discovered that it's better to use his powers to their full extent without being held back by a humanoid body shape or mindset, but then he forgot it and relearnt it in this chapter? why?

It tends to be difficult for people to change their ways. When Michael talked to Ion he’d simply declared his intent to use his powers to their fullest. This was him actually following through with that decleration after some slight hesitation.
