The gardener won the competition with the black forest cake and he looked so happy, he even thanked me. To be fair, I tasted every cake there but actually, I didn't normally eat sweets that much, especially cakes. Not that I hated them, though.
When Charles brought me home for the first time, it was my birthday that day and we had our first dinner at home together. On our table, I remember there was this birthday cake that he prepared and it was the only time I'd ever eaten a cake. I didn't even know what it was called at that time. I just knew it tasted delicious and I couldn't forget every bite I had that night.
After I tasted those cakes tonight, I kind of knew it would be that one particular taste that brought me nostalgia about my first memory of childhood. Indeed, my family couldn't afford a cake for every birthday for everyone, and yet that first and only one-time experience was what made it precious.
