Grey was fully conscious, he was trying hard to stop the miasma from corroding his body. He could feel his mind wavering, a sign of the miasma as well. This miasma wasn't normal, hence its outrageous ability to attack not just his body, essence, but also his mental energy. If his body is badly corroded, he could still fix it, but the moment his consciousness is corroded, then it's all over. This is something he knew about, so he did everything in his power to keep himself awake, and at the moment, the only thing keeping him conscious is the pain he is going through from his flesh constantly falling off and regrowing.
