Hanna awoke with a start as a rough hand slapped over her mouth! Fear welled up inside her throat as she was immediately reminded of when the gangsters came to abduct her and her parents. If not for the faint morning light revealing that it was Mr. Weathers, Hanna might have bitten his hand out of panic.
“Shh,” John whispered as he looked down at the wide-eyed girl, “You do not want to wake up Mary. Get up, get dressed and do so as quietly as you can. We are leaving.”
As John removed his hand, Hanna responded with a confused, shaky whisper, “W-what is going on?”
“I will explain later.” John whispered back. “Quit talking for now.”
John then stood upright and walked softly back to the office’s door to wait on Hanna. Hanna sat up to look at him better. She could tell that whatever was going on, John looked nervous or perhaps displeased. Seeing this unfamiliar look did nothing to ease her worries.
