The Marker doesn't use memes. As long it is within the markers range it transforms dead tissue with electro magnetic force on a cellular level and turns it into necromorph tissue. There are special necromorphs that can inject a phatogen that turns the person into one within seconds. The only way to kill them is by causing the necromorph to loose large amounts of blood. Preferably by cutting all limbs or incineration. They aren't really dead but turn into a dormant state without enough blood. Once enough biomass is gathered, they will be turned into a brethren moon. The moon will collect the black marker and is this able to join the thelepathic network of the moons. One of the created of the game said that the reason they weren't able to find Alien life is because Alien life was destroyed, hence the title "Dead Space".
