Growls of zombies reverberated in the silent street.

It's been now two weeks since this crazy situation started.

From one day to another everything changed.

Just like that.

No warnings, no previous prophetic dreams, nothing that could help Anna Gale onto this situation.

"Mother, I must go and get somehow food. Being eaten by zombies is scary, but dying out of hunger and there is food in other houses is ridiculous. And I have to do it now, as long as I still have the strength to run. Please, let me go. My sisters need food as well." She pointed at two thin children that had nothing to eat now for two days.

Jocelyn Gale shook in fear but knew that her eldest daughter was right. If they don't get food soon, all four of them will die soon.

"Go... and be careful." She could only agree as she herself had no more strength, she knew that already.

Michelle and Alice Gale glanced at their big sister with hope in their eyes. They were already so weak that they could only look at her.

Even speaking was hard for them now.

Or crying...

Anna Gale put her backpack on, strapped it tightly and sprayed herself with disinfectant.

For some reason, they avoided their house when they sprayed with this thing every day.

But this is getting less as well and she has to get another bottle of it soon...

Growls became weaker as the big group of zombies actually hunted animals as well. Not only humans.

They didn't let any creature survive long enough to turn into another zombie. So there are no new zombies.

Is that a good thing or a bad will be shown in the future...

With slow moves, she opened her window and slowly slid outside. Whole pots with water stood around the house as protection.

1. Zombies hated water

Is it really protection she had no idea and had no plan to prove it right or wrong. She just slowly stepped one step at a time and ducked as she heard slurpy steps moving her way.

A growl and strange screech could be heard as the creature started sniffling like a dog. It seems that the disinfectant worked just fine as the creature started moving away.

Anna didn't move even one step until the sound of steps was far enough for her to slowly move towards the neighbor's house.

Luckily the window was open and she slowly entered the house and saw that door was wide open. Her heart skipped a beat as she heard movement outside and hid literally behind the door.

Her quick heartbeat was so loud to her, that she was afraid that the creature passing the house would hear it.

But it didn't. It moved quickly after the growling crowd that hunted dog or a cat that strolled through the silent town.

Unfortunately for them they couldn't hunt birds and sometimes gathered around a tree and started at birds in the branches with their pale eyes.

That proved the second fact.

2. Zombies can't climb.

Or better said it's just an assumption.

When the steps were far enough she slowly closed the door and locked it as the key was still inside the door.

The sound was luckily so minor that the creatures didn't pay attention. Empty cans rolled around in the slight wind and made enough noise so city zombies became deaf to this noise.

Strange, isn't it?

Anna Gale almost slapped herself for dazing for a moment and slowly entered the kitchen area. But seeing all those noisy things on the ground, she almost cursed.

It seems her neighbor was preparing dinner when they turned and attacked her husband as soon he opened their door.

The food already attracted a bunch of bugs, including cockroaches, flies, maggots, and even ants.

She glanced at the open cabinet and her heart jumped. Jackpot!

Rice, noodles, canned food.

Miss Jackson used canned food?

Wow!

She always claimed that she was the best cook in the neighborhood. Now Anna Gale was grateful that this comment was wrong.

She slowly stepped over the pot and stepped on broken plates. The crusty sound was luckily not very loud and the windows here were closed.

With shaky hands, she slowly, very slowly moved the chair in front of the counter and stepped on it.

Unfortunately, she was still short with her twelve years and as her mother was short as well, it seems she won't grow much more.

She slowly took the backpack off her back and started filling it first with cans as they need food that can be eaten immediately.

Rice, noodles and other things she will take with her when she comes back here.

Her backpack was so heavy, but she stubbornly wanted more. With a sigh, she took a nearby cooking apron and stuffed as many cans as she could, and slowly went down.

This time the sound was louder as she was much heavier than before. The sound made her freeze and listen in that position at any noise that could imply any movement outside.

But nothing showed it.

With a heavily beating heart, she slowly rose her foot to step over the fallen pot and slipped.

Just at the last second she held herself onto the nearby fridge and saw that it was still cold for so reason.

Then she remembered. This house was the only one that had solar panels. That means as well that they could heat up in winter or even cook when is rainy weather.

The creatures run away and hid in open houses and two nights ago this house was filled with those creatures that stood motionlessly and waited for the end of the rain.

She thought about it and put a few empty cans and pots near the door. Yes, exactly there as it would be loud if the door gets opened by anything.

Zombies were violent but dumb.

Closed doors were like thick walls to them.

But windows not.

Almost like they knew that windows could be broken they rushed towards it if they smelled something, anything...

Caring for Mr. Mutant

[COMPLETED] How can a Mutant and a Mutant Caretaker fight for their love, if science is their greatest enemy? ------------------------ Year 2023: Random DNA mutations suddenly occurred around the world. These mutations caused newborn babies to acquire animal traits, and no one knows why or where they originated. Year 2033: When funds, advanced technology, and a capable workforce became available to study these mutants, a national team of scientists was formed, called the "DNA Mutation Cadre" or "D.M. Cadre". They were given modern, state-of-the-art laboratories complete with equipment and isolation rooms. Here, mutants were studied and monitored in exchange for a large sum of money and government assistance. Year 2048: In the busy city of Makylee, a 25-year-old part-timer, Lia Brentvale, got fired from her two part-time jobs in just one unlucky day. Since her parents aren’t around, she’s the breadwinner of her family, providing for her two college brothers. She applied as a Mutant Caretaker in the D.M. Cadre Research Facility and after passing their exam, she was assigned to the mysterious and aloof vulture mutant. But as she got to know him, she also learned more about D.M. Cadre. Together with her hacker friend and their batchmates, they tried to uncover the deep secrets that lie within the research facility. ------------------------ PREVIEW: Aesop had always felt that being a mutant is a curse. But upon meeting Lia, he started accepting himself. Lia was always pointing out his strong points. She was always encouraging him to enhance his skills and discover his talents. She always tells him not to think of himself as a test subject just like how the scientists treat him. She reassured him that even though he's a mutant, he's not less than a person, so he shouldn't look down on himself. It was her uplifting words and her mere existence that gave color to his monochrome life. "Lia… I love you," Aesop uttered as his golden eyes stared through her deep blue eyes. "Ae, I… I love you, too," Lia then wrapped her arms around Aesop's neck, drawing in close to him. Aesop's hands slid down to Lia's lower back, and he embraced her. Their heartbeats quicken as their lips graze against each other. Lia thought it would be just a simple kiss, just like they had always done after their very first kiss, but she was wrong. Aesop's right hand suddenly caressed her back, then he placed it at the back of her head, pulling her to him with a little force. The vulture mutant's majestic wings enveloped them, and it was as if he was owning her. Aesop's wet tongue slid into her mouth, and it surprised her. She tried to resist, but with his hand at the back of her head, she couldn't get away from him. Eventually, she gave in to that passionate kiss... NOTE: Not a superhero story, but tackled more of science ethics and social issues ------------------------ UPDATE: Added CFMM Special - The Afterstory chapters after the Finale.
