Spiraling Back in Insanity

Zen feels his blood run cold as soon as he catches sight of Anastasia.

He gasps in horror as she looks back at him with no emotion. Thrown into panic, he reaches out to the darkness - to her in vain. He keeps calling for her in desperation, but he is not getting any answer. It is as if she is not really there in the first place. 

This could not happen. Everything he did was so that this wouldn't happen. He couldn't lose her like this.

"Did you think you would live happily ever after?" 

A distant voice echoed. 

Zen had not even finished registering those words in his head when he suddenly heard the sound of a trigger being pulled. A second later, a blare of gunshot resounded in his ears, striking terror into him. He went numb when he saw how it stained Anastasia crimson. She didn't scream - she's quiet. But after a moment, she lets out a choking noise while blood seeps from her mouth.
