Mutants...
Born with extraordinary abilities and yet, still, they are children stumbling in the dark... searching for guidance.
A gift can often be a curse. Give someone wings, and they may by too close to the sun.
Give them the power of prophecy and they may live in fear of the future.
Give them the greatest gifts of all...powers beyond imagination and they may think they're meant to rule the world.
(Egypt, Giza)
Pietro looked at her smiling slightly, and it was meant to be reassuring, but Wanda didn't feel relieved in the slightest.
While she was arguing with Magneto, a broad hooded figure had suddenly appeared.
His skin was leathery, a shade of grey-blue that is in no way human. He stood at the entrance, utterly out of place. With ornate designs etched on his armour.
She instinctively tried reaching his mind, but all she felt was silence - both psychic and actual - it was odd and quite intimidating.
"I don't think I've seen you around here before," the figure said, "And believe me, I'm sure I would have noticed someone as special as you."
There was an odd cadence to his voice that emanated from underneath the shadow of the hood, a sense of purpose coupled with a strange, vibrating timbre.
" Do not worry my child. He won't hurt you. " Magneto assured from the side.
" Wh-What is he?" Wanda couldn't help the shake in her voice.
"Mankind has called me by many names." With the concealing robe discarded, the mutant makes for an incongruous sight, his powerful frame, and ornate armor a sharp contrast to their surroundings.
"Elohim, Shen, Ra - I've been called many names over many lifetimes. I am born of death. I was there to spark and fan the flame of man's awakening, to spin the wheel of civilization. And when the forest would grow rank and needed clearing for new growth, I was there to set it ablaze. I am En Sabah Nur. I am Apocalypse."
When she saw him, she knew for sure, En Sabah Nur was powerful.
It started with a shiver down her spine the first time she heard the name. Then the same effect over and over again. The feeling of a puzzle about to be complete.
"You sound like you think you're...apart from them, apart from mankind." She said.
"I have lived for millennia. To me, they are children. We are greater than they are. Stronger. More powerful. Better." He answered.
Still, why couldn't she shake the feeling that there's something fundamentally wrong?
She remembers the nightmare she had a while ago, the one she couldn't remember once she woke up - was it him? The one who would end up hurting Pietro?
She unconsciously swallowed, forcing her bitterness aside, if it weren't for Mystique's meddling they wouldn't have found out about Magneto being their father, which lead them to this current situation.
<Pietro we should leave this place. It isn't safe here.> Wanda communicated telepathically.
Pietro shot her a look. < He's the one who's going to help us get our revenge. He can make us stronger, then we wouldn't have to worry about the Avengers or anyone else trying to stop us. >
< We will get our revenge, but not like this! >
< You know I can hear you. >
Wanda felt a tremble in her bones at the sound of his voice inside her head.
The effortlessness at which he hijacked her telepathic connection with Pietro only made her more alarmed.
Her grip tightened and with a mental effort she tried to push him out, but his hold on her psychic energy was tight, unmoving.
" A commendable effort, they may still be even more potential to uncover. Come join me." En Sabah Sur said.
Wanda had the inexplicable sense of being summoned, and before she stopped to think about it, her feet were carrying her forward.
Apocalypse raised his hand and put it over her head. This close, the aura of power emanating from En Sabah Nur is an almost physical presence.
"What do you want from me?" She said.
"I want you... To feel the full reach of your power. You've only had a taste of your true strength. " Apocalypse answered calmly, as-a-matter-of-factly.
"Such pain, such anguish all brought on by their weapons. You don't have to fear them anymore. against true might, none can stand in your way. But, first I must snuff out that weakness that's holding you back." He continued.
Apocalypse's eyes glowed white, showing that he was using his powers. A purple portal suddenly appeared, and without delay, they walked through it, with Magneto and Psylocke following them.
Going through the portal Wanda felt dizzy.
Closing her eyes, she tried to ground herself before she opened her eyes looking around. She wished she hadn't.
The dark identical broken buildings were made like a maze. The ground was muddy, and the sky was gray. Her old home, she felt the chilling air going deep in her bones If she closed her eyes she could still hear the gunshots and the sound of shoveling and explosions.
Picture the blinking red light coming off the warhead, waiting for her and her brother's death. She turned around breathing hard. En Sabah Nur stood there behind her looking patiently, waiting, Psylocke at his left and Magneto.
Pietro wasn't there.
She clenched her eyes letting the tears fall.
"Reach, as deep as you can," Apocalypse instructed. She saw her parent's dead bodies, even Pietro's as her mouth was open in silent screams.
" NO" She shouted getting up as the rubble on the ground raised as her energy surged.
Red strands of energy flickering and cracking around her. "I'll do as you said, please don't hurt them" she begged and screamed as she saw Pietro's eyes slowly turning gray.
She was twitching and the small attempts of screaming that died in her throat turning into a sound between a hiss and a groan, like she was being choked, something closing her throat, was worse than any scream. Wanda found herself sobbing loudly.
"You'll learn soon my child sometimes one must be sacrificed for the sake of the others." The man coldly scolded. And she saw Pietro's body hitting the ground gray and lifeless.
Cold
Dead.
Pietro was dead, and she felt her heart was exploding as she let go. A heart-wrenching scream reaching her ears. Her own scream. She reached out. Clinging to everything she felt ripping it apart.
'Everything they've built will fall! And from the ashes of their world, we'll build a better one. You have the power to change the very fabric of reality.' She heard it in her head and it felt like she was being pushed back to the corners of her own head without anything to hang on to.
En Sabah Nur.
Rang in her ears. She tried to push back. But the words already wrapped around her like a rope pulling her down.
En Sabah Nur
The last thing she saw was Pietro and her parents' bodies turning into a pile of ash on the muddy ground of Sokovia before she felt darkness surrounded her consciousness and everything went blank.
"NO!" Wanda woke up screaming, and the door to her room burst open, a figure hurtling in with panic.
"Are you alright?" Pietro's voice flooded Wanda's mind as the lights in the room turned on. She flinched from Peitro's loud words.
Wanda woke up gasping, she struggled to get up and ended up falling off the bed.
"Hey, Wands. Easy, Easy. It's okay, I'm okay." The familiar voice parted the mists of her mind.
"Pietro?" Wanda whipped around, looking for her brother. A blur flashed past her eyes, and when she turned around, he was there.
"I'm here. I'm so sorry Wanda. They didn't tell me they were going to do that." Pietro's eyes were soft. Wanda didn't think, she just acted, with a soft cry, she wrapped Pietro into a warm embrace.
"I saw them, Pietro. How they died, he made me live it again. You were dead too. I had no one, I was all alone." Wanda broke down, crying into her brother's chest. Pietro patted Wanda's back gently, his head buried in her hair as tears leaked from his eyes, as well.
"I know... I'm sorry." Pietro replied, and Wanda's arms tightened around him.
"Why?" Wanda asked.
"You'll find out soon. He made you his horsemen just like he did for me. Your powers should grow even stronger over the next few days. " Pietro said.
" Please, don't leave me Pietro. I don't want to be alone anymore." She begged him, with tears in her eyes.
He kissed the top of her head, and said." Don't worry Wanda, nothing is going to keep us away anymore. I won't let them. " He said.
( New York, Cypher Labs)
Dr. Hansen looked at Rogue's passed-out form, sighed, checked her datapad once more, and made to leave. It seems that was whatever was wrong with Rogue, was more serious than she previously thought.
It was sad to think that a girl as young as her, was left in this condition, she already had half a mind to reprimand Ramsey or whoever was responsible for the girl's current comatose state.
Dr. Hansen stopped, her hand resting on the room's door handle when she suddenly heard clothes rustling. And a gasp.
"Ha… ha…" A weak voice behind her gasped.
She turned around slightly startled but felt relieved as soon as her eyes settled on Rogue.
Sitting up, Rogue was stock still, eyes wide in shock. She turned her head slightly and looked downwards and across the room at her, with eyes that were glowing yellow from within.
"Rogue? Are you okay? " Dr. Hansen said as she came a bit closer, slightly unnerved by her eyes.
The girl's jaws worked, lips spasming as she tried to make a noise. "H-help. Help me."
" What's wrong? Are you in pain?" Dr. Hansen asked.
Dr. Hansen stepped forward towards her but was surprised when Rogue's eyes started glowing even more.
Rogue suddenly smiled, but it didn't reach her eyes. Something changed in the air around Rouge. It scared her.
"Ah, that's the stuff… It's been a while since I've had to do this, but I guess this isn't so bad. Just my luck to run into that damn physcic chicken. ," A deep and guttural voice escaped Rogue's mouth.
Dr. Hansen stepped back in shock, a shiver running down her spine." Wha..What are you? What did you do to Rogue?!" She asked.
Her head snapped towards her." Oh, hey Doc!"
Rogue's grin grew even more unsettling, as she moved towards the door blocking it. "I'm afraid Rogue's not home anymore. Let's just say she... bit off more than she could chew."
What Dr. Hansen didn't know was although, Rogue's ability was limited to absorbing powers from mutants and a small set of aliens. The result was not always desirable, since Rogue was also known to be able to absorb memories.
Of course, an entity as old as the Shadow King would have hundreds if not thousands of years' worth of memories at the very least.
Meaning best-case scenario, Rogue would go into a coma. Worst case she'd end up taken over. Additionally, she may have absorbed some remanent psychic energy, which would have only made her more vulnerable.
Dr. Hansen's arm suddenly started glowing, everything around her seemed to simmer though there was no way one could fail to notice the dangerously orange tinge shining through her skin.
" I can't let you leave! Whatever the hell you are I'm not letting you use that poor girl's body. I'll stop you by force If I have to. "She said defiantly.
" Well, that's too bad, isn't it? And, here I was thinking about letting you live. " Rogue said, with what sounded like a sorrowful tone.
Without, a second's delay Rogue snapped off her power suppression bracelet and rushed towards the doctor.
The Shadow King who had possessed Rogue knew that by speeding up neural signals in a mutant's brain, he could greatly amplify their powers, and reaction speed, and after looking into Rogue's memories, he had another trick up his sleeve. Putting his fingers on Dr. Hansen's temples he tried to absorb her power.
"If you're lucky, the regeneration energy will be good for one free life, let's see how much you've got left." The Shadow King said with sadistic glee, as Dr. Hansen screamed.
