Like a dictionary

 The task of finding his mother was proving to much more difficult that he originally thought. Yes, the detectives too did their best to look for her when she disappeared, but they never considered the supernatural element, just because it was supposed to be supernatural.

Over time, he managed to gather all the information available for him from all the sources that he could locate. The filed provided by the detectives were all read thoroughly by him, yet he failed to find any further clue to his mother. When after days of trying and overnight reading of her last remaining unpublished work, he failed to receive any clue it was bound to drive him on the edge. He was this close to giving up on finding his mother.
