How about he wants something that simulates combat, it will not make him superpowerful and will circumvent his lack of experience in fighting against any other form of life, in addition to allowing him to fully use the martial arts he asked for, since he will have real combat experience with them.

What if his wish was to make you a better writer or if he wished you weren't a beta or if he wished you didn't ruin stories with your talent(or lack thereof)... what if he wished to be written by somebody else

How about a spirit animal? Like a bunny spirit (no op dragons) this shows, not tells, that he is familiar with being around spirits and why they are quick to give him face or respect when korra messes up.

Try giving him water and earth to stabilise his personality and style of fighting so he isn’t insane and can think level headed. Personally I like a cold level headed mc over a ruthless doing things in he moment mc.
