I think the author need to slow down on the intro to his powers and have arc dedicated to him finding out more about the local area(town) he woke up in. And surging this arc he can slowly figure out about his shadow powers. Then have a hint of his soul powers being even more powerful. After that maybe take a arc to get the protagonist invested in his new life before throwing a obstacle in his path.
