Chapter 85

EXT. to INT. - WATERFRONT WAREHOUSE - DAY

Ray pulled up twenty minutes later behind an ambulance with its lights flashing. She waved to the two paramedics pulling equipment out of the back before heading for the front of the run-down warehouse. The smell of rotting fish and salt washed over her, the harbor close. Far from the commercial beaches, the industrial area was about as ugly as she expected, all rusting chain link fences and galvanized steel buildings crowding the pot-holed street.

Ray paused near the entrance, eyes scanning the line of police cars for the familiar dark blue Charger that would mean Gerri was here. To her surprise two huge, black dogs stood at the front of the detective's car, just inside the shadows of an alleyway beside the warehouse. For a moment, she was sure their eyes glowed red. But, when she blinked, they stood and trotted off out of sight, leaving her with an uneasy feeling.
