Engagement Party, Part 3

The boy that was sharing a table had been trying to think of something to talk about, had finally looked up to realize the girl wasn't even awake... His face was indifferent, but his ears had been tinged red. The hall they were in was decently quiet other than the slight bustle from nearby workers, who were arranging more portable chairs. Xian was impressed by the amount of effort the Sheng family had expended for this event.

After finding out that Sheng Yiyi was going to become his fiance, he looked more into the Sheng's business. They hardly had any information on them, which Xian found a bit strange. In fact, he was considering having some of his acquaintances in the mafia dig up more on them, but he stopped. Interacting in the mafia was a dangerous task, and currently Xian had an upper hand with many owing him favors. However if he were to spend those favors, then he would be at a disadvantage, if he asked for something simple that came out empty, then it would be a waste of a favor. Xian was going to ask Yiyi, but after seeing how much they doted on her, he realized that would also be a fruitless venture.

When Xian paused to stare at Yiyi's peaceful sleeping face, he thought back to when she had taunted him in the boy's bathroom after school. The boy had a mischievous grin as he glanced toward the large clock on the wall. Now seemed to be a somewhat good time to get his revenge... Xian knew that the guests would be arriving soon, and somehow when he thought of someone else seeing Yiyi's sleeping face, he felt disdainful. The boy had quietly walked to the other side of the table. Yiyi's long eyelashes had been in a relaxed position. To Xian, she looked like a cat that was trying to peacefully sleep... It made Xian feel the great urge to bother her to no end. The boy at first glance seemed to be small in stature, but upon further examining, he was about average for a 17 year old, and especially compared to Yiyi who was buried within her own small arms, he seemed to tower over as he quietly rested his arms, and leaned down by her ear. In a hushed voice, "Oh no! Yiyi! The party's over!" Yiyi who had been peacefully getting some shut eye after having to be stressed all morning had instantly shot up, and in the process she actually slammed her back against something. Quickly turning around to see what she must have bumped into, her face clearly flustered from missing her own engagement party. Without looking who she bumped into she lightly bowed her head in a nervous fluster. Xian watched her reactions from start to end, and backed away as he bust out laughing. Yiyi looked like she wanted to cry a bit, she actually was just still a bit drowsy, so her eyes were drooping in a way that made her look like someone to be pitied. Xian had recovered from his fit of laughter, "Don't worry the party hasn't started, I was just getting revenge for yesterday." Yiyi's head quickly became clear as she let out a relieved sigh. She wouldn't be able to look her parents in the eyes if she failed to appear at her own celebration. Xian couldn't get over how quick her reactions had changed, just a second ago she looked like she would burst into tears, and the next she was back to her calm manner. Yiyi had been a bit pissed from being played a fool by Xian, but she ignored it since they were already becoming friends. She figured that since they were only temporarily engaged, that is until he falls in love with Chun Tao, and asks for an annulment, they might as well stay on good terms till then.

...

Madam and Master Sheng had sent an attendant to go retrieve the to-be couple, however she still hadn't returned. Meanwhile, the attendant who was unintentionally eavesdropping, felt extremely embarrassed at the sight of the Chao's young master bullying the young miss. After waiting for the situation to calm down on it's own, the attendant walked towards the couple and awkwardly explained for them to go help greet the guests at the entrance.

...

The first guests had just started to arrive, as Yiyi and Xian had met up with the family. Yiyi seemed to be a bit shy, and Xian had seemed bashful, after all he had realized that there were other workers that had seen them, and it somehow improved his mood. The guests came in, and the pair of fiances' stood next to each other as they invited them into the hall. The party had finally begun.
