The Light of Our Solus (previously known as Random Guy Quest) is a RWBY based quest hosted on SpaceBattles.com, though it features a large cast of original characters and plays around with the show's canon while adding in new plotlines. It stars Mordin Solus, a recently born Eldritch Abomination who has spent thousands of years sleeping beneath the planet, waiting to be born. Taking the form of a wolf/fox faunus, Mordin lives out his life among the people of Remnant, training to become a hunter for no other reason than it seemed interesting at the time. This story is written by my buddy lostghost over on spacebattles.com. I recieved his permission to post the story here. If you enjoy the story please check out the quest over on spacebattles!
The soul, the very culmination of one's being, it truly is a beautiful thing to see. The children of Man and Faunus, their souls burn bright with emotion. The Grimm, soulless creatures that hunger for the death of Human and Faunus kind. From an outsiders perspective, the Grimm's Victory would seem inescapable. Yes, no matter how strong you are, with an enemy that is both innumerable and untiring is it a wonder that most would call a fight against such an opponent futile? Then why? Why do they continue to fight? You ask yourself these questions as you wait.
You are a Solus, a traveler of sorts. You've been growing in this world since time immemorial, waiting to be born. Your kind is one that travels the vast emptiness of space, time and other Realms? There are quite a few words that you still don't fully understand. Long, Long ago you were seeded on this planet, how you know this is a mystery onto itself, then again you poses knowledge that you should not.You know that when you are born you will have to discard your current form and enter the wold above. You know that you are the only one of your kind on this world? Galaxy? You wonder if a Galaxy is something you can eat, you also wonder what "eating" is.
How long has it been since you could last think?
Is it time yet?
When can you be free?
Why were you left here?
All these thoughts fly through your mind, you really can't wait to be born, you're sure life will be wonderful! You don't know how but you can feel that it will only be a little longer until you awaken.
What will you be? As a newly born Solus you will be able to take the form of any being on the planet you've been seeded on. This place feels weird Even though you have no idea what that word means, you definitely want to be born in a place like that!
Ah...you're falling....asleep...again. You can't...W..a..it to wake..up.
====
With a startling gasp you awaken. "Argh...what is that light?" it bothers your eyes.....wait, you have eyes! you must have finally been born! You've never been happier to be in so much pain! Even if you're only starting to understand what pain is. Compared to not feeling anything this is great! Aside from the pain, you can hear some kind of rushing noise in the distance and you can also smell so many things.
After looking at the glowing star in the sky which you know is called the "Sun", you quietly sit down and enjoy the fact that you're finally alive, even if the only thing you can feel at the moment is pain. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to stare directly into the sun? Well, you learned something new already! Life is kind of great so far.
Thankfully, as a Solus you have many talents at your disposal. One such talent is the ability to heal most minor wounds quickly and to regenerate any extremities that you may lose. After figuring out how to move these weird "Leg" things, you set off towards the sound you heard earlier.
On your way towards the sound, you see plenty of trees and little "Animals", it's quite a sight, though most of them seem to run from you, you wonder why?
What you find is something called a "River", you dip your hand in it and a cool feeling washes over you hand. After taking a quick look at the water, you clearly see what appears to be a Faunus looking back at you.
Knowing exactly what to do from the random glimpses of the world above, you extend your hand and say
"Greetings Comrade"
The Faunus also extends his hand, but you both only end up plunging your hand into the river. Oh! you understand know, this is only a reflection of your current form. You quickly take another look at the river to see what you look like.
When traveling through ones body, you must make sure to to drag in anything else
Huh, it looks so weird only having 4 limbs.
Rip, Tear, Kill!!!!
You're suddenly filled with the desperate need to NOT be standing here. You don't know how, maybe it's your body's new instincts, but you jump across the small river.
Sadly, only recently acquired legs you fail the landing and fall on your face. Quickly turning around you see some kind of creature.
It's one of those "Grimm" and it seems like it wants to end your life. It Looks at you, it's red eyes staring into yours. You can see a hint of confusion in those crimson orbs before it's replaced with hate, It growls and begins rushing you.
Right, you've only been alive for a short while and there's no way you're going back to that emptiness. You're going to defend yourself and crush this creature for DARING to take away what you've been waiting for so long.
The beast charges towards you, you won't die here!
Like many of your kind, you are aligned with a major Domain at birth and your's happens to be Time. Space allows quick movement, long range teleportation, personal pocket dimension and such. Realm allows drawing strength from different versions of yourself and eventually allows you to visit these "Alternate" worlds.
Your main dominion is Time, it allows you to manipulate the rules of the world to slow, stop and manipulate time. At the moment, your mastery over this power is less than what your mind tells you it should be, but then again you have only very recently been born. You will no doubt get better with training. For now slowing down time should do you just fine, even if you yourself are slowed as well. While you might also be affected by your power, it is not nearly to the extent that everything else is.
|And The World Slows To a Crawl|
You quickly move out of the beasts way and watch as it swipes its razor sharp claws at your previous location. You wonder how it perceives your movements right now? It doesn't matter, this thing tried to ruin what you've waited for so long, you won't forgive it. You better hurry up, you can already feel your grasp on time slipping.
With nothing on your person other than your fists and feet, you thrust your arm out like a lance in the general direction of the creature. you hope you hit something important.
Why can't I have tentacles? they would work perfectly here!
Your hand slides into its back and rips out of its chest. So squishy?!?!
/And Time Resumes/
It whimpers and turns its head trying for one final attack, it fails. You are much to quick for it and easily dislodge your arm from its back and jump out of its range.Thankfully, you didn't fall this time, Sucess! It falls to the ground and soon there is nothing left but dust in the wind.
That...that was easier than you though, a bit anti-climactic really. Oh well, at least you learned how to jump.
Well, what should you do now? While that small encounter with the Grim was fun in that you learned a lot about your body, you're lost on what to do from now on. You never really thought about what to DO when you were finally born, you just wanted a chance at life.
In the end you decide to go North, after all, it's quite close and should probably be safer, right?
But before you do that, you quickly check your body to see if everything came out alright. The last thing you want to happen is something similar to that jumping incident, you might have been fine then, but next time you might not be so lucky. You start by moving your arms in different directions to find the range of their movement. After bending your arm 90 degrees backwards, you realise that your body probably shouldn't be able to do this, if the severe pain is anything to base that off of. A couple seconds after you heal that up, you begin to see how far you can bend your legs. How you ended up with your head on top of your back, you will never really figure out, suffice to say that your current vessel is VERY flexible.
One other thing you notice is that you have a 5th limb, it's coming out from just above your lower rear. You remember that some of the people that belong to this race often have these "Tails", you think you'll call yours "Taily".
A quick moment after naming your appendage, you devote yourself to controlling it and figuring out its limitations. It's quick work and soon you're moving Taily like one of your arms, if your arm was fluffy and made of hair. Why do I want to chase it?
Lastly, you realise the fact that you are missing something you've seen humans and faunus carrying with them. They usually have it on most of the time, and you don't have it.
Namely, clothing. How are you going to find coverings so far from mankind? Well, you guess leaf coverings will have to do for now, the last thing you want is for others to find out you're some kind of otherworldly being right off the bat because you're not wearing any clothing.
[Basic Knowledge of your body gained! Makeshift Clothes Gained! Taily Gained!]
After getting acquainted with your body and Taily, you decide to inspect how great your current control over time is. You experiment by picking up some stones off the ground and seeing if you can slow or speed them up. This experiment is a resounding success, you figure out that it is possible to slow the speed of any object you are touching. The following experiment which entails swinging your arm while you slow your hand was not nearly as successful. Thankfully you can just regrow a new hand, even if it is somewhat costly to do so. With those experiments done you move on to finding the limit on how long you can keep the world slowed.
Things go decently well and you figure out that there really is no limit on how many times you can use your power, only how fast you can move while under its effects. The longer you use your power, the more it affects you. Eventually, you'll be just as slow as your opponent, but thankfully you'll still be able to think much faster than them even if your body is as slow as theirs.
[Basic limits of Current time powers learned! Can now slow down anything you touch!]
With all your experiments done, you have one final choice. Do you keep your severed hand? It might not be of any use other than emergency nourishment. You might also want to decide on a name, having conversations with this world's inhabitants could become problematic without one. As there is no other Solus around to give you a name you'll have to choose one yourself.
After deciding on a traditional Solus name and shortening it so that it wouldn't instantly melt the main processing organ of any of this planet's inhabitant's, it comes out as Mordin Solus.
Finally done with all that, you head towards your destination.
====
While on your way north, you somehow manage to get lost. You have no idea how you managed this, seeing as you can feel the direction of your destination. You end up finding yourself in a very...delicate situation.
What you stumble upon can only be described as.....deadly. Before you is what appears to be some kind of Grimm nest. In total, you count around 40 of the type you killed before, 30 of some big round quadruped type and 2 with some kind of flight appendage. Nothing gathers your attention more than the predator sleeping at the center. It towers over anything you've seen so far aside from the large trees nearby.
You can feel a sense of wrongness from this creature, in fact, you only now start to notice that all the other Grimm are also emanating this feeling. You know that if you were to go up against this creature as you are now you would be hard pressed to survive. With all the other smaller Grimm around, your chance of survival drops to around 5%.
