43.The change

The seconds passed in slow motion as she could see how the planes dropped bomb after bomb at the huge amount of zombies. ''Stupid idiots. They didn't even warn us!''

Her heart shook. She knew that they were far away on the other side of the country, but the radiation will arrive soon enough. ''Computer, calculate the time how fast the wave of radiation will hit this place?''

Everyone held breath. As usual, she let the big things that are happening outside be screened openly.

Soon the computer voice could be heard. ''If the wind does not turn in 46 minutes the first wave of radiation will pass this place. Warning! The radiation is harmful to all life forms that will be attached to it. The strength of radiation is 10 times stronger than the human body can handle. Warning! Warning!''

A man came behind her and patted her shoulder. ''Thay said they will be here in half-hour. That is enough time...''

She turned around and shook her head. ''That fool. To seal everything we need at least 20 minutes. What is wrong with his head? Send helicopters. I do not care about that grain. We have enough food and can support ourselves for a long time. If those idiots didn't drop atomic bombs then we could use the grains, but considering the radiation... Oliver... Tell those fools to give up grain and get their buts inside. I have thousands of people to protect. If they are too late I can't consider their small minds. Understood?''

Oliver could only nod and give orders. She made it clear. If he doesn't come back on time she will let him die outside. Her face was cold and he got worried. Emma was actually the kindest woman he ever met if she changes too much... But actually she changes as good as well, but only for this place. Not for his brother that stubbornly wanted to save as much food as he could for people inside.

If he continues to be this stubborn her heart will grow really cold and he will lose his chance. They just found her again, if he loses her again, he won't get another chance. He knew so far about Emma Thompson.

She is nice and kind, but stubborn. If she said she will do something, she does it. This time he could completely make her furious. And on top of that, he could lose his life. Really idiot.

''Hey. She will leave you outside. I am not joking. Helicopters are on their way to you guys. If you want to stay outside, stay. Do not kill other people.'' Oliver's voice was cold.

Mario wrinkled his eyebrows. ''They dropped the bombs?''

''Yes...'' Oliver just answered him with short sentences as he could see Emma icily glancing at him. ''She is pissed off. You better get on the helicopter and come back. She really will leave you outside. Not kidding tho.''

''Something else happened as well, right?'' Mario already knew that she wouldn't be that pissed if some more things didn't happen.

''Rats found in the maintenance stairs. It seems some had keys to her level. I fear big things might happen. '' Oliver tried to explain while staring at her as she pressed her lips into line while staring at the camera that should show the place where the bombs hit.

''Tell her to prepare for a lockdown of the whole place. Even before we arrive it should be done. Hurry.'' Mario knew now that their effort was not completely wasted as he could see the base already in the eyesight.

The trucks speed up over uneven fields and shook immensely. Luckily they took military trucks that were made for all kinds of roads. He concentrated on the road and gave orders to everyone trough radio to take care of cargo. It would be horrible if they lose everything so close in front of the doors.

The road was anyway no answer in this case.

''Oliver, can you wait for just second before sending the helicopters. We need to check something. Please.'' He had seen a map of their surroundings before. If they find a shortcut and do not go around with trucks maybe they could be there on time.

''What are you doing? What is going on?'' Oliver was getting anxious. He could see Emma's face turning frosty as she heard his words. Stupid. he should have gone a bit further away, now no matter what I say she won't listen. ''I am sending the helicopters. No wrong, I am getting out myself. If I have to I will knock you unconscious and take you back. We have enough food. Leave those trucks.''

Mario started laughing as he passed the familiar corner. ''There is no need to do that. I am planning to find a way that all of us can be safe at the same time. Me and grains and you especially. I would never put Emma and Aisa in danger.''

Actually in passing Emma pressed loudspeaker on Oliver's phone and he froze for a second. But before he could do anything those words could be heard from the speaker. A small smile appeared for moment on her face and she just turned the loudspeaker off and strolled further away, loosing her cool air, for a moment.

''You are near?'' Oliver was stunned.

''We took some old road and are rolling from the southeast over the fields. Lower the wall from that side. Soon you will have visual of us.'' Mario was hoping that they won't have any problem before the wall.

Oliver reported to her and she just waved her hand. ''Call back the helicopters and start lockdown. We have no time for the play.''

''Yes, ma'am.'' He saluted and left without looking back. The sudden chilly air surrounding her made even him scared. ''So scary...'' Wasn't everything fine just while ago?

Emma knew that she changed. No. Wrong. She didn't change.

She is now what she was before. Real her is nowhere and she has no wish to become again a worthless piece of human only because of some man. Never again!
