Midnight at the hallway of Central Hospital Emergency unit, the three who were having dinner at Hard Rock could only wait for medical advice. It took some time before they realized something wrong happened. Pam who went to the rest room has not been back and its been almost 15 minutes.
Jenna checked on Pam. Whether to give comfort or find an excuse for them to go home and leave the two guys in the restaurant, she will act once she assessed her situation. To her surprise the ladies' restroom has been locked. She knocked and softly called out her name but there was no response. Through the help of the restaurant manager, they found Pam lying on the floor unconscious. There were signs she threw up.
"Why did she pass out?" Jenna is so worried. Although she is aware, they have seen Tim hugging Pam she still asked, "were you in argument? What did you say to her? What happened? Is she sick?"
There was a hint of accusation in her voice, but Tim understood Jenna. "We talked and before she went to the restroom, we ended our conversation on good note. I admit she cried as she smiled back to me. She told me she is fixing herself before you guys return. She is probably embarrassed."
"Is her stomach upset? Did she have food poisoning then? But the three of us are fine."
"Babe calm down…let's wait for the initial findings."
Tim is worried, he looked stable but several things are running on his head. Pam is sick for sure, but she can also be pregnant. Could she be? "Jenna, freezing her egg cell is this for real?"
"Yes! She has been considering it for a while now. It's one of the reasons why she requested to see me."
"Throwing up and passing out, it would have been better if she is pregnant than sick."
"Why do you believe in immaculate conception?" she was sarcastic.
"You don't need to fire back at me Jenna. I would rather wish she is pregnant than be sick."
"No one gets pregnant single handedly. She doesn't even know if she can carry a child again in her womb. "She was too emotional and did not realize she gave out some information she should have kept to herself and Pam.
"Again? What do you mean?"
Jenna once again misunderstood Tim and blurted out, "what is so unclear with what I said? A woman needs to have healthy to be pregnant. So, you know when a woman's uterus is damaged there is very 50% to 0 chance of successful pregnancy." Jenna suddenly halted. She talked out of anger and irritation.
Tim noticed that sudden change in her face and stopped probing, "how would I know. I don't have uterus." So, Pam had a problem with her uterus, but he was referring to 'carrying child again' and not for further explanation. He chose to keep his thoughts.
Mark gently squeezed Jenna's shoulder as she steered her to seat. Tim also noticed this. These two is keeping something from him. Pam got herself pregnant before. He has no idea whether Pam was in a relationship after him. He was her first boyfriend. He is aware of this. If Pam was in another relationship this should not matter however if there was no one after him then did he impregnate her? Did she have miscarriage or abortion? It's illegal though in this country to get abortion by choice. Tim is in deep thoughts.
Their attention was caught by nurse who went out of the emergency room calling out person accompanying Pamela Cruz.
Jenna rushed in. "I am her friend, her guardian."
The two guys followed Pam as they were led near Pam's bed. As it was an emergency room, patients were just separated by curtains. The attending doctor had to talk to them outside of the bed section.
"Who is related to patient Pamela Cruz?"
Tim suddenly had to urged of saying 'I am.' It would be ridiculous to say that especially in front of Jenna and Mark. It was good that the nurse immediately replied.
"Doc, she was with her friend guardian here." Looking at the form, "Ms. Jenna Sy. She assisted in securing information about the patient earlier"
"Have you informed any of the family members?"
"She is an Orphan now doc. I am her closest friend here. I act as her guardian."
"We need to make sure we disclose the patient's condition to family members only or those authorized legally. As you know we have privacy law now in effect."
"The last member of the family, her mother died 7 years ago. I am not aware of any relatives as she is the only child."
This piece of information was like a bomb to Tim. It was unknown to him that Pam no longer had her mom and dad around.
Jenna was thinking and remembered the safe deposit. "Doc, I happen to have a Power of Attorney from Pamela Cruz, authorizing me to open her safety deposit upon her request. Will it count?"
The third information was another bomb dropped. Tim is getting complex feelings on the situation. Details unfolding are like pieces of puzzle which his gut is telling him are connected.
Jenna retuned to the emergency room with an envelop and Pam's bag. To be honest she has not seen what is inside the envelope. She saw the document notarized by Pam's lawyer and showed to the nurse and doctor.
"The patient is undernourished, for her height she is underweight. We will subject her to another tests to check but I suspect she has pneumonia. What I was about to suggest is to let her stay in the hospital for few days while we check and provide right medication."
It is no doubt, Pam has been skinny these days, someone who have seen her usual figure would right a way tell this is not her normal size. When Tim carried her from the restaurant, he carried her with ease. She doesn't look sick but rather someone who is conscious of her figure.
"Because she lacks nourishment, she is susceptible to diseases and sickness. Nurse please guide Ms. Sy in signing for Ms. Cruz's admission. We shall be informing you of the schedule of tests that will be done on her. I will her when I do the rounds tomorrow."
"Thank you Doc!"
Jenna proceed to arrange for Pam's admission. "I will go with you. Tim just stay back."
Only one person can accompany a patient in the emergency. There was a stool beside the bed, but Tim chose to stand scanning on Pam from head to toe. So many things happened today, so many things he learned just now. His curiosity is killing him now.
