Conceding defeat

A small wrinkle formed between her brows. "Why would I?"

As soon as the question left her lips, a force tugged on her hand, and she lost her balance—or she allowed herself to lose her balance—landing on his lap. He pulled a stray strand of hair from her face. "It's been long since we spent time together. I miss you."

She sighed in response to his lamentation. "But, chéri, spending time together might just put your life on the line."

Even she didn't believe that she had just told him that. She had wanted to keep it from him for as long as possible, but with his intelligence level, it was impossible for him to be entirely oblivious of what was happening.

Seeing as he was not surprised, she knew that she was right. The man let out a scoff in ridicule. "Shera, are you looking down on your man? What makes you think I would be in any sort of danger?"

She looked at him and was even more helpless. "Don't be so arrogant."
