The others just smiled at what she said.
"Nero there's no sign of any strong monsters, right?" Dan asked.
"Yep, we're still good." Nero nodded
The people fighting than were those who, even though they didn't fight in wars like this they had some experience fighting monsters and had some power, so they only needed to see how they should behave when they were against many insects.
While the ones in the first few teams were those who didn't have any fighting experience at all, and they had to go down while the insects were still easy and weak.
After every team had one fight for half an hour, they split, with teams two, four and six, fighting for the first eight hours, and teams one three and five, fighting after that, and it would repeat.
This was decided so that all of them have enough time to rest and sleep.
Dan's team, being the fourth team, was going to fight in the first eight hours, while Alexander and the other two hunters were still going to help them for the first few hours of their fighting before going to sleep early so they can aid team one which only had some youths who weren't that experienced in fighting even though they were strong enough.
For the rest of the coming few hours, nothing much changed, the insects kept on appesring but they weren't that strong, they were able to deal with them easily, but that didn't last for long, as time passed stronger and stronger insects appeared, and their numbers kept on increasing.
Fortunately, the target of the insects wasn't the village, they were just running away and only those that headed straight for the village would attack it, there was also some insects which even though they appeared quite some distance from the village, turned toward it as soon as they saw it, and those would be drown toward the humans fighting outside the gate.
So the work of the people fighting outside the gate wasn't just protecting the village but also playing the role of a bait, concentrating the attacks of the insects on one place, and therefore eliminating the danger of insects attacking from other places.
Time passed and when Dan's group was down, Dan felt someone come next to him, turning around he saw Nero, who after avoiding the sticky spit of a Sticky Beetle destroyed its head before turning to him and saying seriously:
"A big one is heading towards us, from it's smell it must be an Armored Ant, it's coming fast, it will take it less than three minutes to reach us." As a trained soldier, he knew what he had to mention at times like those, the type of the danger, and the time it would take it to reach them.
Hearing that Dan hurriedly turned his head and shouted two time, one in English and one in Russian:
"An Armored Ant is coming in less then three minutes."
All the seven of Dan's group got ready when they heard that, while the two hunters with Alexander didn't seem as if they believed him, but then Alexander turned to them and commanded:
"Get ready, don't let it hit the walls, deal with it as fast as possible." His voice was loud enough for Dan to hear, he than translated that to English for the others in his team to hear and understand what to do.
Soon Alexander and his team felt the ground trumble under their feets, from their experience they knew that a big target was heading towards them, and from Dan's words, they knew what to expect.
As expected the a gigantic ant like insect appeared, it had a big body and six thick strong legs to handle its body, it was brown all over and its shell gave a hard strong feeling.
As soon as it reached the clearing in front of the gate, where many dead bodies of different insects were laying around, it stood there frozen while its eyes reflected the light of the torches lit all over the walls and around the gate.
It didn't stay like that for long, instead in one quick motion it tinted toward the closest person to it, who happened to be Alexander.
Alexander seemed as if he expected it because as soon as the Armored Ant showed an indication that it was going to turn his way, he jumped and rolled away, and as soon as he stood he waved his sword at its leg.
For a hunter like him understanding the habits of the insects he went against was a must, so he knew that if an Armored Ant missed its target it would stop and turn around as fast as it could, before attacking again, so he targeted that moment when it stopped, to attack one of its legs.
What he did was dangerous because if he messed up the timing even if by just a little he would be under its attack again.
The Armored Ant, as its name said, was armored, all of its body was hard and protected, but even though its legs were protected they weren't the harder part of its body, the hardest part of its body was its head, so Alexander's attack injured it quite severely, its joint was bleeding green blood and seemed as if it would be totally removed if it received another attack like that one.
As soon as his attack connected Alexander retreated and stepped away from it, keeping himself in a blind spot at its rear.
The Armored Ant after being attacked wanted to kill him more than anything else, but he was experienced and no matter how it moved he kept himself in its blind spot.
The Armored Ant knew he was behind it but he was too nimble for it to turn around fast enough and kill him, which made it turned its attention to another target, which happened to be Dan.
"Careful!" Aelxander shouted,he was able to see that the Armored Ant was going to change its target and charge at someone else, but he didn't know who, he could only shout that one word so the others can be ready.
Nero and the others, even though they didn't understand what he said, put on their guards, and just as they did, they saw the Armored Ant start charging toward Dan.
Dan was a little bit surprised but he wasn't afraid, he soon calmed down and did something no one was able to notice, he controlled the power inside him and increased his weight, as he did the ground around him snak.
Dan's improvement in controlling the power inside him was great, he was able to either make himself lighter or heavier, but he never tried it in a battle, and seeing the Armored Ant charging toward him, he couldn't stop himself from testing it.
He first made himself as heavy as he could, which he somehow felt was around six or seven times heavier than his usual weight, he than held his axe and waited for the Armored Ant to come closer.
The Armored Ant took less then a second to move from where it was to Dan's location.
Seeing it come closer, Dan brought back his axe, ready to do an horizontal sweep, and as soon as it reached the range of his axe he did just that.
Using all his power he waved his axe hitting the Armored Ant straight to the right side of its head.
The charge of the Armored Ant, even though it was short, had a great power behind it, along with its weight, the momentum it had than was unbelievable, and yet, Dan's attack had an astonishing effect.
Half of the Armored Ant's face was destroyed, and its trajectory changed as all its three right legs left the ground.
Dan just stood in his place and watched its tilted body flow by him due to the momentum, its gigantic body soon fall on the ground twitched for a bit before stopping.
Dan released a breath, and released his power, returning to his usual weight, taking a step to his side and looking to where he was standing, he saw that he left a five centimeter deep footprint there.
Turning his head around him, he saw that even though almost everyone there was fighting against an insect, all of them would turn sweeping glances toward him whenever they had the chance.
Alexander was looking at him with unblinking eyes, he couldn't believe what he had just saw.
When he saw the Armored Ant charge at Dan, he wasn't that afraid because he had already seen his power and he knew that he would be able to avoid it in time, who knew that Dan wouldn't even care to avoid and instead simply attacked it.
Dan's attack didn't only shock Alexander, it also shocked everyone on top of the wall.
When the Armored Ant appeared they all put their attention on it, so they all saw what he did.
Dan suddenly turned his head to look at the wall, and when he did his eyes met the eyes of the old village Chief, they shared a look for a while before the old man finally nodded at Dan.
The Armored Ant was the first advanced insects they fought that night, but they all knew that it wouldn't be the last, its appearance just meant the true beginning of the night's fight.
From than on the fights got harder and harder, and the insects became stronger and stronger, but what helped a lot was Nero's warnings, they made them ready for the fights they were going to have.
And as time passed they became more frequent, putting a presser on everyone hearts.
Right then it wasn't Dan's team turn to go down, they were on top of the wall having something to eat.
Insects meat wasn't something most of them thought about eating, and they weren't able to accept it at first, except Nero who didn't show any problems with having it.
So the others only ate some fruits at first, but with the use of their powers, and not to mention that just them being blood power users meant that they had to eat more than normal people, Dan finally couldn't take it and tried it.
Even though he had memories of him eating it, it still took him a bit of mental preparation before he could put it in his mouth, and as he remembered, it actually tasted quite good, of course what they were eating was a specific type of insects, many of the others were poisonous, only a few types were good for consummation.
Seeing Dan eat too, the other could do nothing but sigh and walk forward and try it, Katherine was the last to do so.
The hunters and fighters on top of the wall found their behavior weird but they didn't say anything and just kept on watching the fights below.
