Act 5: Rescue Plan of the Dead

Day: 1

Time: 3:50 P.M.

Location: Kirishima High School - 3rd Floor East Wing - Infirmary

Time until Nighttime: 2 hours and 10 minutes left

------

The outbreak only happened in a day, and it seems that half of Japan's entire force is now crippled. Plenty of the districts and other areas that are popular are now overrun by the undead. Occasionally, they can see the helicopters of the army buzzing right above their heads, heading in various directions. Of course, people who are stranded in the middle of the horde of zombies will think they are going to be rescued...only to realize those helicopters are not there to pick them up and leave them for the dead.

Souichi's connection to the internet is now getting choppy as the internet begins to make some buffers from time to time. Seeing that he was not getting a decent connection anymore, he decided to save the remaining battery of his phone and turn it off.

"It's only a matter of time before the internet breaks down. It's good that we got information and news about the status of the surrounding areas but knowing that we are left for the dead is not looking good," Chie sighed as she continued to search the drawers for any medical supplies.

"Get used to it. Even in movies, these realities are true. We are just regular civilians and we are not important VIPs. We are all on our own right now," Kyosei catches what Chie has thrown in his direction before putting it inside the bag that they found inside one of the classrooms that are bigger than their school bags.

"Still Kyosei, I didn't expect you to be so chill about this development. Even delinquents that are worse than gangsters would be terrified by their situation right now and yet you seemed to look fine? Do you really have a mind of steel like they have said in the rumors?" Chie asked.

"That's just rumors, but I do feel fine. It's not like they are that scary to begin with. They are just shambling corpses and they are easy to dispatch. If they are tough and have a head as hard as rocks or metal, then perhaps I should start to get scared. Getting scared will only get you scared in this situation," Kyosei said calmly.

Souichi stood up from the bed and joined in the conversation. "Kyosei is right. If we falter and get scared right now, we are only going to be sitting ducks as a result. This is no time to get scared. If we continue to survive, sooner or later, this might become our new reality."

Chie climbed down from the chair and shook her head. "Alright, I raided all of the shelves in the infirmary, and all of the essentials that we might need are already stuffed inside the bag. Though I hope we have more than enough medicine. We only have minor stuff here."

"That's more than enough. These are only for defense if we get wounded during our scuffles. Getting wounded from the zombies will only waste our resources. So it is much better if we don't get scratched or bitten in return," Kyosei zipped the bag closed and handed it over to Chie. "You carry the bag, we will be fighting in your stead."

Chie grinned. "Hoho, never in my life I would dream of being escorted by two manly guys like this. I am very flattered!"

Souichi blushed hearing that but Kyosei was unbothered.

"We are going to head over to the specified location alright?" Kyosei picks up his baseball bat.

"Are we really sure we will need to stay high up in this situation? Isn't it better to head downstairs and fight our way to the streets?" Souichi asked.

Chie shook her head. "Suicide, boy. With how chaotic the first day of the outbreak, we are all going to be bound to be killed as a result. We don't have enough weapons and we are going to tire ourselves faster if we try to do what you just suggested. Getting a safe place to rest and fall back into is a better thing on the first day, wait for the chaos to subside and then fight our way out."

"Indeed. It might sound foolish since the enemies will only increase by the time the chaos is over, but it is better to do than waddle our way through the chaotic streets and get killed as a result of our foolishness. Let's get this done with."

After making sure they were done with their preparations, they were about to leave when the door to the infirmary started to make a sound. Someone is trying to open it.

"Hey, whoever you are, you need to tell us if you are human!" Souichi shouted to the door.

No response. The attempt to open the door stopped but the person or entity behind the door did not give up on opening the door as it began to thump the door multiple times to make it open.

"Zombie. Open it up, we will deal with it."

Souichi gulped down his saliva but decided to follow Kyosei's orders and slowly walk through the door when the door itself fell revealing the zombie shambling through the entryway. Souichi panics and scrambles away from the doorway.

"Holy sh*t!"

"Move it!" Kyosei shoved Souichi and in one swing, detached the rotten head off of the zombie's head. Blood splatters all over the place and the dead body falls over as blood spills over the floor.

"Ugh...disgusting bastard," Kyosei kicks off the corpse to the side as he peeks from side to side to see if there are more.

"We should hurry out of here. The sound of the door falling over will surely attract many of them," Chie said as she followed Kyosei to the door.

"R-right," Souichi follows behind.

And as expected, the zombies came out from their hiding places and began to show up.

"Here they come!"

Leading the assault, Kyosei started swinging his baseball bat left and right and cleared off the road.

"Careful on the floor! The blood of the zombies is making the floor slippery!" Chie shouted.

Kyosei continues to unleash what he can do and dispatches the zombies quickly despite them swarming the group earlier. Souichi is quite surprised by how nimble and strong Kyosei has gotten to the point that he isn't sure if this guy is a natural murderer or just not seeing the zombies as humans anymore.

It didn't take long before the attacking zombies were all dispatched and they were safe once again. However, Kyosei didn't leave immediately and began to search for the corpses.

"That's disgusting, Kyosei, what are you doing?"

"I am looking for their phones. Surely they do have it with them, yes?"

"What are you going to do with them?" Souichi asked.

"A good alternative for our phone batteries. I know we don't have signals on our phones but that doesn't mean our phones are already useless. Since we don't have a way to charge our phones until we reach the next area to camp with, having extra batteries would be great. And these phones might also get some great usage for other purposes."

The two didn't know what Kyosei was thinking but decided to follow his instructions despite them not liking what they were doing.

"Get their money as well, they won't need it anyway. We might still be able to use them in some areas and who knows what this money will bring for us."

Then, while they are busy at doing their business, Kyosei's pocket starts ringing in a muffled tone. Kyosei checked his phone and his eyes lit up before he answered the phone.

Day: 1

Time: 3:50 P.M.

Location: Kirishima High School - Gymnasium

Time before the Nighttime: 2 hours and 16 minutes left

-----

Miyuki has been trying her best to contact Kyosei for a while. His phone continues to be on the dial tone which is not a good sign.

"This isn't good..." Miyuki is slowly losing hope but she doesn't stop dialling the man on the phone.

However, right when she was about to give up and just stop entirely, one of her calls finally connected and the other line rang. Miyuki's face lit up as she tried her best to not get too loud about the situation. She didn't want the others to notice that they were currently contacting someone else.

"Yes, it is connected! Please pick it up!" Miyuki is praying harder than before to ensure that the call will not just drop or the signal disappear completely.

And it seems her prayers are now answered as the call stopped ringing and someone answered the call.

"[Miyuki? Is this you?]" the voice on the other line is a bit shaky and static but she can tell it is Kyosei's voice.

"Kyosei! F-finally you picked up! Help us please!" Miyuki pleaded.

"[Good to know that you are <static >. Are you perhaps inside the Gymnasium right now?]"

"Yes, how did you know?"

"[With how much ruckus <static > guys are doing <static >, I can easily tell what is happen-<static >]" Kyosei's voice answered albeit with some static on his voice, Miyuki could still understand bits and pieces of his words.

"Does that mean it will be impossible?" she asked.

"[Not really but why escape? With the numbers <static > have over there, you will be much safer here than with me.]"

"We might be safe here but sooner or later, we will become meatshields here by some of our teachers. And Kaze has been giving some kind of morale speech to the survivors here that the teachers approved of considering he was kind of an orator of some sort. And now, he is somehow trying to make these people with us in here to bend to his will."

"[What about the adults?]" Kyosei asked.

"Most of them are in favor of his speeches while a few of them do not like them. Mr. Leo is one of them and is currently helping barricade the areas."

"[Good to know. But first<static >, let me ask something, is someone named Sena and Nanami currently there with you?]" Kyosei asked.

"Yeah. They are. In fact, Miss Sena is here with me and is listening to the call. Nanami is busy helping Mr. Leo finish the barricades at the moment."

"Good to know. While I can't guarantee I can help you guys get out of there, I can indeed help you guys get out of there and leave that place. I suggest on finding a good way to escape on an elevated area, perhaps the roof. If you guys try to escape below, the zombies will just overwhelm you guys out. There should be a pathway that leads to one of the open windows that is enough for a person to get in and out to use inside the storage room. Be sure to keep that open. Coordinate with the people who you think will be able to help out."

Just as Miyuki is about to get a few plans from Kyosei on a good way to escape there, the call has ended. Miyuki looked at her phone's screen and soon realized that the phone's signal was once again lost. This time, she has no idea how long will before the signal recovers. Considering the call, it seems that she will no longer be able to contact Kyosei again.

However, now that they have a bit of a plan, Miyuki will have to discuss this with the other people who want to escape with her and fill up the remaining holes that Kyosei failed to say after the call was cut short.

Day: 1

Time: 4:10 P.M.

Location: Kirishima High School - 4th Floor East Wing -staircase to the rooftop

Time until Nighttime: 1 hour and 50 minutes left

----

The call ended abruptly and when Kyosei checked the phone's signal, the network was once again missing.

"Ha, so much for calling. The network is a bust," Kyosei turned off his phone and glanced over at the window at Miyuki's location.

"Have you confirmed if my girlfriend and my sister are with her?" Souichi asked.

"Relax, your precious girls are indeed with her. They are safe with her at the moment. Happy now? Now stop thinking too much about them, we needed to get to have a safe place to stay this coming evening as soon as possible. If you want them to be rescued as soon as they can, work with us here and stop complaining alright? The longer they stay there, the longer time they might be in big danger from the other survivors or the zombies trying to enter that place.

Souichi nodded. With the confirmation of their safety, he is now happy that they are not in danger.

Chie then appeared again after scouting ahead.

"Come on boys, the way is open. I just needed you two to clear out the rooftop area, it seems we are not the only people who thought going to the rooftop would be a good idea."

"Do we really have to head here? We don't have a way to get away from the zombies if we get trapped here," Kyosei frowned.

"If we stay in the rooftop, sure. But we are staying on the clock tower. Not only is it far from the ground, but the zombies can't head there either because of the height. Not only that but there should be a few tools here and there that might help with rescuing the girls on that place without going to the ground level."

Kyosei stood up and handed over his bag to Chie. "Hold this up. Four eyes, back me up."

"D-do I really have to?"

"If you are getting scared, then just back off and let me do it."

"N-no. I will help out. I can't just make myself be a burden."

The two slowly head over to the door while Chie follows behind. Slowly pushing the door open, the rooftop revealed a few zombies scattered around the place. The place is bloody and there are signs of struggles here and there. Whoever tried to escape through here or thought they could stay here was mistaken and was now eaten alive and has been turned into the walking dead.

"Get moving!"

In a quick manner, Kyosei jumped towards the nearest zombie, and in a single swing, he broke the zombie's head to pieces, kicking it away before heading straight to the second target.

"Filthy creatures..."

Souichi gulped seeing the carnage Kyosei is doing but he can't just let the guy get all of the glory. Gripping his weapon tightly, he charges towards the attacking zombies as the two began their cleanup operations.
