The True Magi?

It had taken a while, but the boys finally ran out of energy and fell asleep. Once they woke up it was time to say goodbye to Zero. "Zero can't you leave a clone behind?" asked Null

"No, once detached from the body they slowly lose energy. Also once I reach sinelux they can cancel all my clones. Now, remember boys this won't be the end, if you can get strong enough I'm sure we will meet again." The Watcher wanted to give them hope and an incentive to grow stronger.

The goodbye grew a little awkward after that as neither party knew what to say. Infy in his mind had seen it going differently with each of them making meaningful farewell speeches, but in reality, it ended anticlimactically with just a "Bye See you later".

After Zero had left Lisa had called all the children and Bolat in for a meeting.

"Do we have to use that again? these headbands always give me a headache. With all this technology can't you make it so I can join mental link or make it so Null can talk?" Chris was tired of being the only one who couldn't communicate telepathically.

"Sadly, you aren't psychically sensitive. Maybe someone from the spiritual faction could fix that? but even if they could it would cost a fortune and you are broke. As for fixing Null, we can't do that. His brain is completely rewired and we don't any technology to fix that" replied Bolat

"Why someone from the spiritual faction?" Chris was curious and hoping that there was a solution to his problem.

"As psychic sensitivity is linked to the soul field. Psychically sensitive people have a permanent link to the soul field. Our best guess is that we are returned souls who have already entered the soul field once" explained Bolat. He continued "Anyway we are on a bit of a timer, so I will get straight to the point. The Dwarves don't want you here and we need to find a new home".

Lisa mentally sighed. "You could have explained that, better. The Dwarves have to return to their previous mission and they are going to be leaving us here with Bolat and Runemagi Vark and their retainers. They will be in charge of monitoring the solar system and us. Zero has left both the Aethon and the Eous here but has taken everything else."

"So we are homeless?" asked Jania

"Yes, but I'm having a survey vessel delivered, but it has some issues" answered Vark. The Runemagi could have had a better vessel delivered but he suffered from the same condition as most dwarves, That of being stingy. He continued "The vessel was made for dwarfs it will be cramped for some of you but the bigger issue is that its artificial gravity is set at about 1.8 times that of the earth".

0.8g might not have sounded like a significant amount but each human in the room had spent a lot of time in space or on Mars. They had grown up in significantly less gravity than earth and had already been struggling with 1g gravity on their current ship.

"Can't we just change the gravity, so it's the same as here?" inquired Chris, he wasn't ready to live in 1.8g.

Bolat was the one to answer "We can but it would cost you, and you don't have any funds. The Angel supplied the materials to change the gravity on this ship and to be honest the rest of the dwarves are feeling uncomfortable." He like the rest of the dwarves had grown up at 1.8g which was the gravity of their homeworld.

"So what passes as currency? And how do we go about getting it" Lisa had no idea what these advanced races would want.

Vark pulled out a large crystal from a pocket. Both he and Bolat had a strange look in their eye's when observing the crystal. The love of gems or items of worth was inbuilt into every dwarf.

"That just a small Zallium crystal, Me and Infy made loads of that for Zero." Null didn't know he had almost given both dwarves a heart attack.

"No you might have made something similar to Zallium but no one can make pure Zallium. The fact that it is used to harness the fields and can't be made is why it is used as currency." Vark was the first to recover from his shock. He figured that the young ones just didn't comprehend the facts.

"I am not lying, I will show you." Null quickly ran to where the Aethon was currently docked and took out a large Zallium crystal and took it back to the group. "See we made this one." Null handed to a crystal about twice the size of the one Vark was originally holding.

"What! That is pure Zallium! How it's not possible. You have to show us" yelled Bolat over the mental network. He was excited as if Null could make Zallium then he could become the richest of dwarves.

The group then moved to the workshop. Where the boys tried multiple times to make Zallium but couldn't.

"See, I told you, you couldn't" Vark the Runemagi was feeling vindicated. He knew it couldn't be made. Zallium was a heavy element only created in 5th generation stars. In theory, those with mastery of the fields could possibly fuse elements together to make it but that required such a significant change to the natural laws that not even the higher races could power it. That included the blackhole powered council flotilla.

"Just give us one last try, but this time we will take this off" as Infy finished talking, Null removed the field restricting band. As they took the band off Null grimaced in pain but then continued with the mission at hand and with Infy help quickly created a small pure Zallium crystal. As soon as the crystal was created they quickly locked the band back into place. Null sigh in relief as the pain was gone.

"Yes!, you can make Zallium" shouted Bolat. While Lisa concerns were elsewhere. "Why did it hurt to remove the band?" she was worried that maybe it was being used to control them.

Vark was the most affected of the group but he didn't say anything at first. 'what are they? How could he remove the band? that should have required the use of magic and how did he combine those elements to make Zallium it didn't look like it used any energy'. The only thing he could do was ask "How?"

"I told you we could do it, so don't know why you're surprised. It doesn't even take much power as all you need to do is just swap the sounds. Zallium sounds like this and these materials sound like this." Infy then made both the sounds which sounded like gibberish to the rest of the group except for Null. "As for the pain, this ship is very loud and out of tune. The field restraints make it quiet."

"That alchemy. To change one element into another. That is not how the universe works" stated Lisa. She was a scientist and even with all the new discoveries lately, they still followed some form of scientific principles even if she didn't understand them.

"It not unknown, but the power requirements make it unobtainable by anyone other than the paragons. What we just saw should be impossible. This is dreadful news" Vark might have seemed calm on the outside but inside he was close to having a breakdown.

He was having a war between his lust for wealth and his honour in being a caretaker for the humans. He knew that if the other dwarves knew what they could do then they would try to claim them as their own, or outright kill them to protect their wealth. If the other races found out about the twins they would do the same.

Vark was now sure that Null and Infy were True Magi. Each race had its methods for manipulating the Fields. Some called it magic, others technology but they required energy and controlling medium which was normally Zallium but other medium worked but far less efficiently. Some of the more knowledgeable magi or field users always speculated that they should be races that can interact with the fields without a medium. These theoretical users were considered True Magi.

Now that he knew True Magi were possible, he wondered why out of the literals thousand of races, none of them had true magic. He suspected that maybe the council had a hand in that. Maybe they had handed over responsibilities to the dwarves because they wanted the humans wiped out. Did they know before the twins that humans had a chance of becoming True Magi? These questions were too massive for a lone Runemagi to be pondering.

Chris was reaching his limit the mental communication device was giving him a headache but he wanted to be part of the conversation. "isn't this good? We can make all this Zallium stuff and buy everything we need".

"It won't work that way sweetheart, we now have the goose that lays the golden egg. Everyone will want them, or if they can't have them they will remove them from the board." Chris blushed at being called sweetheart by his mum in front of everyone. The dwarves got the general gist of it but had no idea what a goose was.

"Your mother is correct, no one can know what happened here or what Null and Infy can do. This will complicate things significantly going forward. Now I believe myself and Chris are reaching our limit. We will reconvene tomorrow." Vark had reached his limit and was glad he didn't have to explain more as it seems Lisa already understood.

Chris was embarrassed that he hadn't noticed that Vark need a communication device as well, and felt guilt over his early griping. Yet he really did wish he could communicate without one.
