Based on a story, how can characters change over time?

Sometimes characters change because of the people they meet. If in a story a character meets a wise old mentor, they might start to change their ways. Just like in 'Star Wars', Luke Skywalker was a simple farm boy at first. But after meeting Obi - Wan Kenobi and then Yoda, he gradually transforms into a powerful Jedi, learning new values and skills from them.

Characters can also change as a result of their own self - discovery. In many stories, a character embarks on a journey, either physical or emotional. As they explore new places or feelings, they come to understand themselves better. For instance, in 'The Alchemist', Santiago goes on a long journey in search of his personal legend. Along the way, he learns about his own capabilities, desires, and fears, and he changes from a simple shepherd into a more enlightened and purpose - driven person.

In a story, a character might start out as shy but when faced with difficult situations, like having to speak in public to save someone in a story, they become more confident.
