Ask for the name of a firework novel

The story begins with the female protagonist meeting the male protagonist, who is being beaten up. Later on, the male protagonist picks up the buns he threw away and goes to work in a bar. Every time the female protagonist meets the male protagonist, the male protagonist is either being beaten up or eating.
I read it a few years ago, but I really don't know the name!
