In ancient Chinese novels, the scorpion spirit was often referred to as the lute spirit, perhaps because her body was shaped like a lute, or perhaps because her weapon, the scorpion, was shaped like a lute. However, the name probably came from her weapon because the scorpion demon's weapon in the novel was usually in the shape of a pipa.
