White Deer Plain was first published in 1993 after six years of creation by Chen Zhongshi. The novel took Bailu Village on Bailu Plain in Guanzhong area of Shaanxi Province as a microcosm. It described the grievances and disputes between the three generations of the two families surnamed Bai and Lu, and showed the historical changes from the end of the Qing Dynasty to the 1970s and 1980s.
