The history of kites in China can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period more than 2,000 years ago. The first kites were made of bamboo washi and were called "bamboo kites". Later, people kept improving the materials and techniques of making kites so that kites could fly and operate better. During the Tang Dynasty, kite technology was further developed and improved. People began to use wood, metal and other materials to make kites and learned to install colorful lights and other electronic devices on the kites for communication and entertainment. During the Song Dynasty, kites became an important tool for military and cultural communication. People began to make more exquisite and high-tech kites such as the Song kite. During the Ming Dynasty, kite technology was further developed and people began to create more complex, more functional, more beautiful kites such as "dragon kite","phoenix kite" and so on. Modern kites have become one of the traditional cultural symbols of China. People still hold various kite competitions and activities in different seasons and occasions to inherit and carry forward the kite culture.
